cubase 5 importing audio file problem?

hi,
when i import an audio file it automatically stretches it to project tempo and as i am importing a speech sample the results are not nice .ive tried altering settings in prefrences e.t.c but with no luck.any ideas??

in cubase, double click the imported clip, that opens cubase's audio editor window, there is an orange button on the upper panel (in the middle of it) that switches musical mode on and off. turn it off.
