Cubase 5 "edit instrument channel settings" problem

This problem just came up in cubase for me -
When I have a channel selected with a VST loaded, I like to adjust effects while playing stuff on my keyboard. But now, when I click on the little 'e' (edit instrument channel settings), the track gets deselected, making it impossible to edit effect settings and play on the keyboard at the same time.
Is there a setting I can change to fix this and make it be back to normal?
When i click the 'e' (Edit instrument channel settings) and i want to add send effect amount while playing the channel i selected the e on with my keyboard, every-time i select the e the selected channel becomes unselected. when i go back and select the channel so i can play the vst thats on that channel the edit page disappears.

if i understand your problem correctly try to play with these options maybe it will help :
File / Preferences / Project & Mixer
Select Channel / Track On Edit Settings - Select or Deselect
also try
enable record on selected track
