Hey forumusers, ive been checking around cubase 4 a bit and there are certain things i would like to know from their customers.
First of all is it worth the money, i got sx3.
Is the mpex2 time stretch algorithm included in all or just some versions?
Is the integrated EQ as shitty as it is in sx3?
Is it more "logic" than "cubase" compared to sx3?
And what is the main reason you should upgrade to Cubase 4?
What bundled plugins are good? I hardly use cubase sx3 plugins, just because there are better versions out there. But i like "cheap" plugins once in a while.
Thanks for reading.

I recently shifted to Cubase 4. Im likin the new look more than the Sx3. And also the inbuilt vsts have got loads of sounds! NEw cool fx as well. NEw distortions, filters, cool eqs etc etc. To add to this, Steinberg recently gave a pack full of presets ranging from pads to drum kits to synths, which is still available in the Steinberg site.
Initially i had a few problems, quite a bit of clicks and unwanted noise. But after i installed the recent update to 4.5 its all smooth. the only issue u might face is that some vsts might not be compatible with 4. But most of the good ones are. Im not very versed with the algorithm that you are talking about. The mixer is pretty much the same, except for a couple of few new addons.
Apart from these, i find it pretty stable. It has been quite worth the money for me.
I'd definitely give u a nod for it.

cubase 5 will come out soon btw..i would wait after NAMM..
regarding your questions i would say..go for C4 for sure..
some reasons:
flexible routing..
sidechaining..
way better onboard plugins..
the Eq is way better..
dont know if mpex 2 is included in all..but if you go, go for the big one anyway..its way cheaper that before just a few months anyway..
its still cubase and not logic but with the free routing it tends to get to the point..with cubase 5 there will be a tool for developers wich allows the dev to write in vst 3 and am still compatible to all vst 2 hosts wich is the main reason why just a few dev made the step into vst3..
and vst 3 is full capabil with sidechaining..vst2 is actualy not..
thats where logic is big and was ever with audio units..every plug was able to get sidechained..
what do you mean with wich bundeled plugs are good? some are good some are better in c4..like the eq is better, the compressor is good the multiband compressor is better..and so on..
all about it is worth to upgrade, even when it comes to stability with this 4.5.2 update i got no problems..
maybe it would even be better just to upgrade to 4.5.2 rather that to 5, because no one knows how stable this one is actualy..
hope that helps..
some this still annoying..
no good midi learn, just the new quick controls...
but you got the nocturn i know..so no problem there..
and the arranger part is no able to get midi triggert in cool way , so still no intuitiv live mode possible...
but hey, just use live when your done for example..
cheers

Thanks for great comments.
What i ment by bundled plugins Zork was that im not a big fan of the chorus, flangers, reverb b, (i love reverb A thou) and i realy dont like the VSTi´s you get in sx3 no fun at all. I dont think ive used a single one in my tracks, ive tried them all but never been comfortable using them.
It would be a great solution if you could implement any type of graphic EQ into the cubase enviroment, the EQ provided in SX3 is horrbile. It would be a great thing if you could use the waves REQ4 for instance since they do the same thing, yet waves does the job, the steinberg integrated one just doesnt. But this is only me dreaming.

the new channel eq is quite good..for basic stuff its really useful ..for more special colourful i would say get the tritone collection for example..
i like my sonnox eq most..and i use this one almost on every track actualy..but for erasing the bad fq in the sounds, so for chirugic stuff i use wave arts eq..but just in the end..
for flangers and fx plugs nowaday i would go for uhbik definatly..
cheers

I see i see. Well im all for the waves EQ, api, veq, req, Q.
Will check out uhbik thou, would be nice to hear anything about the actual sequencer aswell in Cubase 4, is it easy to work with. I think that sometimes the SX3 build can stop the workflow while mixing.

What algorithm are you using Psymorph?
In SX3 there is MPEX2 which you can put to Quality 4. There is also "drum" "standard" and another one i dont remember, but in Cubase SL3 and SE3 the mpex2 algorithm is not included in the timestretch tool.

hey, as you touch the topic, i just have a small question. surely many of you have had ideas about small improvements of your software - do you usually send your ideas to the software developers??? and to whom exactly actually?
i will ask steinberg to put a score export option as discussed in the music theory topic as well as to improve the microtuning functions as discussed in the topic about 432 hz. i can even tell them about the nice financial opportunities behind this. would be nice if there is some time till cubase 5. but to whom to send it? it is so simple things, it is not so difficult to program it.
