if you live 1.5 hours away, i am sure that poublic transportation is an option
plus there are always lovely people traveling by public transportation, whom you would not otherwise meet           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

the land of the fest. is actually in Tenn. so you probably are not to far way after all. Not sure about your public trans. to the land, but leave an email addy and maybe some one coming from tenn. can arrange to give a ride.
good luck hope to see you there

for the curious, a message from Mr. Will:

Alot of people have been asking me about where we got the concept for
Croatan. With only ten days left before the event, I feel that it's OK
to let folks know why we used the name. To answer that fully, please
read this first and then I'll explain more;

Gone to Croatan – selection from Peter Lamborne Wilson

We were taught in elementary school that the first settlements in
Roanoke failed; the colonists disappeared, leaving behind them only
the cryptic message "Gone To Croatan." Later reports of "grey-eyed
Indians" were dismissed as legend. What really happened, the textbook
implied, was that the Indians massacred the defenseless settlers.
However, "Croatan" was not some Eldorado; it was the name of a
neighboring tribe of friendly Indians. Apparently the settlement was
simply moved back from the coast into the Great Dismal Swamp and
absorbed into the tribe. And the grey-eyed Indians were real--they're
still there, and they still call themselves Croatans.

So--the very first colony in the New World chose to renounce its
contract with Prospero (Dee/Raleigh/Empire) and go over to the Wild
Men with Caliban. They dropped out. They became "Indians," "went
native," opted for chaos over the appalling miseries of serfing for
the plutocrats and intellectuals of London.

As America came into being where once there had been "Turtle Island,"
Croatan remained embedded in its collective psyche. Out beyond the
frontier, the state of Nature (i.e. no State) still prevailed--and
within the consciousness of the settlers the option of wildness always
lurked, the temptation to give up on Church, farm work, literacy,
taxes-- all the burdens of civilization--and "go to Croatan" in some
way or another. Moreover, as the Revolution in England was betrayed,
first by Cromwell and then by Restoration, waves of Protestant
radicals fled or were transported to the New World (which had now
become a prison, a place of exile). Antinomians, Familists, rogue
Quakers, Levellers, Diggers, and Ranters were now introduced to the
occult shadow of wildness, and rushed to embrace it.

PLW

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1999, I was on Hook Island outside of Tampa Bay. While on the isle,
a friend produced a document for me that would later inspire me to do
what I do today. The booklet was called "Pirates Utopia" - which I
read that weekend as soon as it reached my hands. Later, I read a copy
of "Gone to Croatan"; an essay by Peter Lamborn Wilson. The idea is
that when a society finds itself having to compromise it's very
existence for the sake of a destructive system, that society 'changes
teams', redefines it's language and in some cases, flat out
disappears.

As a reggae fan, I would have loved to use "Exodus", but so many
connotations are attached to that phrase, we left that dog where it
was. My friend Adam was the person that named Croatan though; he also
had read the same essays and came to the conclusion that Croatan was
the best. The river delta where Croatan is being hosted is also
infamous and has a long history that stretches back into the
Mississippian serpent cults.

Many have heard the phrase - "Be in the world, but not of the world".
Religions have adopted that meme into their collective catechisms, but
from my understanding, often fail to see that it's meaning is an open
condemnation of their current world presence. The idea of being "in
and not of" is definitely not new. While the public gets to see 'you'
everyday, once you have awakened to your creative self; your
consciousness is largely absent from the McWorld culture of the
current era, and focused on more heartfelt endeavors of the Spirit.

That's what I think the settlers at Roanoke did, they realized that
the native people would be able to help them survive in the New World
and that the Crown and Church had left them out to dry. With that
realization, they blended into the tribes and left the colony.

We live in an age of excitement, political intrigue and danger; for
the more adventurous spirits - this is an exciting time to be alive.

Truly,
Will

LECTURE GUIDE & EVENT POLICY

Directions, Travel and Lodging:
From Asheville, take 1-26 North and continue for 44 miles. From Johnson City, take 1-26 South for 15 miles.
The AAHC's land is located outside of Erwin, TN. To get here, take Exit 18 in Erwin, TN and turn towards Jonesborough. If you are coming from Asheville, cross under the bridge. Go 100 yards and turn left on Buffalo St. (Hard to see, directly across from clapboard church). GO SLOW as this is a residential area with young children. When you get to an intersection, continue forward on S. Buffalo St. Follow the signs.
If you are flying into the area and need a ride, let us know. Several people would like to offer. Any tip/fee for the trip should be arranged with the driver. Contact us at appalachianarts@gmail.com
Airport sites:
Asheville Regional (NC) – www.flyavl.com
Tri-cities Regional (TN) – www.triflight.com
Knoxville International – McGhee Tyson (TN) - http://www.tys.org/
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (SC) - http://www.gspairport.com/
Lodging:
We are offering camping with access to water and toilets. If you would like to book a hotel room, we suggest looking in Jonesborough, Johnson City, TN or Asheville, NC. Lodging information for Johnson City, TN and Asheville, NC: http://hotel-guides.us . Also, Jonesborough, TN (12 miles from site) – is an excellent town to stay in as well.
Food:
Vendors will be on site, but please buy your food before you come to the event. Our vendors are able to serve vegetarian food. If you are vegan, we will probably have a raw foods person vending this weekend.
Parking:
We will be providing limited parking on site. However, if you are from Asheville or Johnson City – please carpool. This is an Earth Day event, so we will help you try to find a ride share.
Gate Policy:
The gate closes at 10 PM each night and will be locked. If you wish to leave, go before then. Only staff and bands after this time. The lecture will end well before 10 PM.
Alcohol, Tobacco:
Due to the lecture – we ask that no one bring alcohol onto the property. No beer cans, wine bottles or liquor. If you violate this, we'll ask you to leave without refund. Also, all forms of tobacco smoking devices should not be displayed or used. Tobacco used in ritual is fine.
Pets:
Outside of snakes, reptiles or birds – Do not bring any pet, especially dogs. If you bring a dog, you'll be turned around at the gate.
Attitudes: Please leave curves of habit and bad attitudes at home. Period.
Media: All media for this event has been prearranged, do not bring video cameras to the lecture. Also, do not take pictures of people without their permission. Lecture tapers are allowed, unless otherwise restricted by Dr. Dennis J. McKenna or the lecture guests.
Site Cautions:
By attending Croatan, you (and your assigns) agree that: the staff of Croatan, the Appalachian Arts and Healing Center, Touch Samadhi, Dr. Dennis McKenna, Harmony Works and the Southern Appalachian Land Trust are not responsible for the addressee's physical protection, injury or death and by attending, you release all claim of legal recourse if such later event(s) should occur. We will, however, do what is reasonably possible to assure your safety while you are visiting with us.
Harmony Works is a historic site. We want you to explore the property as much as possible. Indian Creek and the Nolichucky River border the property and meet at the start of Buffalo Mountain. We have granite cliffs, quick sand and swamp land on our property. So be careful. Please bring rain gear, mud shoes and warm clothing. The Appalachians are cold at night and the river can bring in a lot of moisture.
Do not climb up Buffalo Mountain – it's deadly. The mountain is sandy, rocky and home to a large population of timber rattlers (no kidding). Buffalo borders the event site and truly is great to look at, but there are better mountains to climb in the area. Ask us about these.
Snakes: This area has been snake land well before the early Mississippian cultures started building serpent mounds here. We have several varieties. Be aware that some are poisonous, but those usually will not harm you if left alone. Do not bother the snakes – if you are caught doing so, you'll be asked to leave without refund. At night, stay on the paths and do not wander into the swamp. Since it will be Spring, the snakes are usually inside their homes – but still be aware.
Bears, Red Wolves and Wild Animals: While unlikely, these entities do show up here. If you leave trash or food out – it will be torn through and eaten.
Shrines and Ruins: Enjoy, take pictures – but please respect them.
Water: Be careful in Indian Creek, but enjoy the river system. If you aren't familiar with wilderness environments, don't go swimming here. The Nolichucky River is great to swim in, but in Spring, it's dangerous. We like our friends safe, happy and not water logged.
Site Relocation:
In the unlikely event of a Nolichucky River basin flood or deluge (but it is still a possiblity here in Spring), we reserve the right to move the event to areas near Asheville, NC or Johnson City, TN. You will be notified at the number and email address you provide to us and we'll also post directions to the new location at our website. Camping on the property should still be OK, if not, we will do our best to make sure the alternative site has camping.
Thank You and Welcome:
The staff of the Appalachian Arts & Healing Center wants to personally thank you for making Croatan possible. Without the support of our community, there would have been no way for us to bring Dr. Dennis McKenna to the Appalachians. On behalf of everyone involved, thank you and we appreciate the fact that we have this chance to bring his work to the public.
