Sometimes I simply send the tracks and experiments to friends as many arrive.
But, sometimes it seems to me that it only constrains me,
As I criticise own tracks I can not define an estimation for this.
Often I dont see sense to upload them here, in a special thread (New Tracks).
How to be? Who faced it?
This question is not deadly, but it often strongly puzzles me. |

everybody sees things with "different eyes".
... to critisize my own sound is only possible,
when I get at least one week of distance to it
and then I'm looking at it from the outside, not the inside

good critics goes like this:
Good things
bad things
opinions, tastes declared with "I feel, I think, I..."
Objective, general things (rare) usualy concern techniques.
Usually people completely confuse pretty much everything above. they say bad things first and talk about opinions and tastes in general forms...
As for receiving feedback:
Completle IGNORE EVERY feedback from people who do not even UNDERSTAND what you are doing. if they don't understand what you do, they can not even have an opinion. its impossible to have an opinion from something you don't understand. people who don't understand music tend to say that they don't like it instead to "I don't understand it".

I got recent advise to ask for the criticism from a DJ rather than another producer. A producer is always going to think something should be different, thats why they make their own music how they like it.
When you ask a DJ what they think you'll get good feedback. They are used listening to tracks and know what they are looking for. They don't have as deep of a connection as to what a track "should" do from an artistic point of view. They don't put their own subjective ideals as to the exact styles and intricate production you are doing on the track. DJ's instead just listen for what sounds good to them, but closely.

this reminds me oth something...
i sometimes ask my girlfriend (she dont like psy, and have no idea about music) what she think about my new track/loop.
the funny think is, she always came up with something really helpfuly, what i dont recognized at first...
like: "this instrument (HH) somehow doesnt fit with the rest of the song, i dont like that" -> yeah, i Eq´d wrong...
i think girl see songs from a total diferent view too, they see the song more as its whole, not like us
i think that sometimes we are to much in our music, that we can see clear... thats the point where "stupit" people can really help gg
cheers

I totally believe that you are entitled an opinion even tough you might not understand or see the whole picture....
Just think of everything we think we know, but we dont really understand (like most things i believe)... we may classify it nonetheless, its all part of a learning experience..

Unfortunately there are no now DJs friends... Maybe because I beginner (1 year in psytrance)
I think it truly as the DJ has sober taste on the style.

To have an opinion about something you don't know is called prejustice.
It's possible to have one, sure, everybody is entitled to do so (I never said otherwise), but its unfounded, therefore not to be taken serious.
Whats the point in having an opinion in something you don't understand/know???
It's most likely wrong. so why have it? There ist absolutely no point in it.

From experience, a good critisism can grow as a track grows on you with at least 3 times of listening at different times - might be a one week thing.
3 different factors are involved in the usual critic:
- personal taste
- current mood (as music can be subjective to feelings)
- raw objective listening ability (varies)
This only points out that one person can critisize one musical creation (art) differently uppon a growing number of listens.

Ok ppl! Thanks!
Other problem here too...
Sometimes when I close a sequencer for some time. Then listen to track of other artists and start to criticise comparing with my track, and frustration... Even depression... Then again start construction of my track and it starts me to irritate, as devil!!! |

criticism is not subjective. There has to be a good reason for any critical comment. Opinions are not considered criticism. If the critique cannot backup the criticism then he/she is just pretending. |

How about that critizism:
"when I listen to the song, in the end it leaves me somehow disapointed, I feel as if I was waiting for something, as if the song promised me something but didn't deliver it. After listening to the song I feel a little frustrated. In my opinion the song should have more of a summit in the end, it should explode more."
Critizism, completely subjective, but still founded.
