How do you get the crisp and clean sound in tracks, is it by pure eq stuff or what is it? because even if i work with live and good vsts, i dont get that serious clean sound, it sounds a bit like a toy always.

thanks for the advice!!

remove bad frequencys and use a clean reverb should do the trick..a lot of crispness comes from mastering as well..

i think you need to train a lot on achieving the sound you want till you get it.

right synth settings imo ....

phatness = fat up the sound, multiple voices/osc, spread stereo, etc.

crispness = envelope settings, filter, resonance settings, eq, reverb settings, early reflexions, etc.

try to work with a synth offering as many possibilities in best quality as u can get. i mean really cool machines like zebra, z3ta, or surge i.e. ....

if youīre just starting i hope i may post this tutorial on how to create a typical darkpsy leadsound on vanguard here. i wrote this for vanguard as itīs a pretty easy to use synth with nice possibilities to start with. u can apply all to any synth of your choice and i think there will be no problem to understand it.
anyway, itīs just something to give u a start, try to understand whats happening there and go to work on your own sounds.

i wrote this a while ago for someone else wanted to get started too on the scared-evil production section. so hope nothing to hassle, just to give u a start:

ok, letīs go ahead and do some f*#°ing crazy sound now. open the sequencer of your choice (ableton, cubase, fruity, sonar whatever). now put in the vanguard synth (just explain this now for vanguard, which is easy to use and u can apply everything to any synth of your choice whenever u want ) hope u got a midi keyboard, if not just have to use the "piano roll" (which is nothing more than a virtual keyboard).
now letīs start very simple and choose a fm sine waveform for the first osc. give it some more voices, usually vanguard is pretty satisfied with 3-4 voices. just screw the button above the FAT button next to the osc section. and sure give it some FATness and also give the FAT button some level. i usually dont need more than 3/4 way of it.
ahhh, and maybe set the detune to your choice, i use to give it 36 semitones, so that i have a crispy crystal like sound in my usual octave range on my keys. otherwise the sound will be some low in frequency i think. anyway this all should give u just a start to think about. the sound will be one pretty often used and pls dont get tooo high by itīs effect and go on to get your own sounds. just think about this and use it as kind of leadsound tutorial or whatever.

now u got a sound. pretty simple sound u just wanna freak now and make it more complex.

so go now and adjust the envelope, which tells the sound when (attack/decay) to play at which amplitude (sustain) and how long to decay after releasing the key on your midi keyboard (release).

so the settings are pretty simple here, u just wanna have the sound as directly as possible. so no attack or very very slight attack, decay to your choice (i like it about 50-75%), sustain to your choice (level/amplitude,so just loudness of the sound), and a short release just to feel the sound and itīs just simply nice working with a reverb u will add later

as u got the sound now as u like it, we come to the crazy part now. get it sounding weired. and weired sounds usually are just modulated in any way. so different parts of the synth can modulate other parts of the synth and interact with each other. thatīs why we have the lfo section and the mod matrix (modulation matrix).
the lfo usually does nothing else than create movement in the sound. itīs same like an OSC, just itīs frequency is that low that usually the lfo is not able to play audible range. anyway itīs an OSC in low frequency range. Low Frequency Oscillator/LFO

so u got this on vanguard above the envelope section i think. anyway it should be easy to find. now try to set up the lfo and give some heavy speed. i use to give it around 60-100%, depends on the sound and my bpm. the lfo HAS to be CORRECT in its speed, as it depends on the BPM. but for starting over now this would get too much. u will find enough stuff on the net about how to calculate these ms/hz/bpm stuff (the point is very easy: bpm=beats per minute/hz=movements each second,....see the relation?).
anyway, now after we set up the speed the lfo is reday to get some control of some parts of the synth. vanguard offers three targets to modulate. the tuning section of the OSC, the pwm (pulse-width-modulation) of the ENV and the cutoff section of the FLT (filter section). just play round with the knobs and your sound will go crazy (i use to modulate the pitch with huge amount, some cutoff and pwm to taste). this is the typical dark lead heared pretty often. but not exactly....... hmm... somethingīs missing.

ah sure. u need to filter the sound, as u dont wanna have the whole, maybe sometimes muddy frequency content. so i like to use a notchy filter in combination with this sound. notch in combination with a lowpass is perfect imo. so just choose the notch+LP filter of vanguard.
give it some resonance, i like 30-40%. keytrack 100%, so the filterīs following the keys 100%....

now u got it. nice stunning lead sound, but itīs not that phat enough imo. thereīs still some crisp missing and some phatness. i like to spread the sound a little to get it more phat without the need to use the FAT button again. so i just go ahead to the AMP section and give the spread button some amount. u will hear now how the sound moves to the sides and gives u the feeling of more stereo/spreaded stereo sound.

anyway, not crispy enough for my taste. so i like to give the sound the room it needs. and make it some more real and 3d like this. also the high freq. content of the reflections of the reverb will do their thing for my so wanted crispness.

i usually give the room not that big size, as i dont wanna have the sound that far away, i just wanna have it nearby but with slight room and some early reflections. so smaller the room and the width of the reverb, damp to your taste, mix to your taste and there u got it.

1a crystal stunning leadsound of nowadays without taking any other effect plugin

this one should need no processing if done right!!!

anyway, i usually dont process my sounds cause with the right synth and the magic "know how to get there" there is simply no need to process anything.

enjoy, cheers

Sending audio out of the computer into a nice piece of gear (eq, tube etc) then back into the computer can also help with that nice polished sound.
