there are a few ways of making a crescendo.
if you are using a sampler to play the drum roll, then you can either adjust velocity in the clip view:
open the midi clip with the drum pattern, and in the section underneath the notes there should be a series of vertical red lines with red dots on the top. these represent the velocity (almost like the 'strength') of each note. you can adjust each of these in an upwards slope to gradually increase the velocity.
there will be a range of different parameters in the you can select in clip automation section, which reflect the adjustable parameters in your sampler - velocity is just one. you might try volume, or decay time, or filter etc. to adjust the feeling of the crescendo.
you could also automate the volume in the arrangement.
as for things sounding static... the answer is careful programming. the reason midi sounds like a robot is because it is a robot! try making the notes slightly different lengths, or gradually adjusting the pitch up and down over the length of the crescendo... there are lots of little things you can do to make midi drums sound more realistic, but note length, note placement, and velocity are the key things.

I asked the question a few months ago, nobody could answer it so I had to figure the way I could do that by myself.
What I do in Ableton is use the Drum Rack on a MIDI channel (basically, it's a sampler), then put an arpegiattor plug-in on the same channel.
Then I only have to modulate the rate of the Arp to do my rolls. |

Automating the volume is easy in the arrangement view. I'm talking out of memory here so sorry if it sounds hazy.
You just select volume in the drop down box on the right side that is below your clip name. This is where that red line appears below whatever you have entered in the arrangement view. Double click on a spot on the line (this creates a solid red ball) where you want the crescendo to start and do the same where you want it to end. You can click and drag the ball at the end of the crescendo up to whatever volume level you desire. You can do this for any parameter you want to automate. Hope that made sense/helped.

try this
make a clip with 4 kiks
duplicate the clip and double the bpm in the clip
then duplicate that clip and double the bpm in that clip
and so on...
now you can take all these clips and make one clip that has a steady increase in speed then you can draw in pitch shift too.. it can sound sweet |

Yeah! I do it this way: record (render) a small portion of the very first hit (kick+crash+fx+whatever) that will happen right after the break. Then cut down a very small portion of it and play with it like avduka says... duplicate many times, play with lenght, pitch, etc... crazy-kind-of-glitchy but not rolls! it kills |

sorry for quoting my self
so you take all these clips you made now and take them to arrangement view put them next to each other and right click and chooose consolidate
the way you double the speed of the clip is you double click the clip and you will see the bpm.. if its 150bpm x 2 you just put in 300 or there is a button x2 just press that
do this once and save it so you can use it in different songs without having to do it againg and again |
