Well here's a question that's been on my mind for a while. Maybe this has been discused, if so nevermind. (I've tryed searching for something similar and didn't come up with anything)

Ok here goes. I've noticed in parties most dj's a just content to getting the beatmatching right and picking the right track to play at the right moment. Home come no psy dj's go in deeper than that? I mean with all the technological advances in djiing equipment one would expect from dj's to actually play with the music. All those pioneer mixers that are used the most at parties (well at least here in israel) have some effects. Why not use them? How about introducing external effects gear to spice up things?

Now I could be wrong. Maybe some are doing this and I just haven't noticed. Allthough to me when I'm at a party all I hear is beatmatching (sometimes beter sometimes worse) and some eq work. Maybe this is due to the fact that trance is so layered with effects that it would just ruin the tracks? On the other hand I'm sure something could be done with more minimal styles or with progressive stuff. Wouldn't you like to hear some echoing or flanger introduced at small doses just at the right moment? To hear a track you know played out differently.

Maybe this is just because the general level of djiing skills in the psy community is not as developed as in other dance styles? Which gets me thinking of another question. HOW COME? Sorry that hehe but that something that's been bothering me also. I mean isn;t the tired excuse that psy started being played out from dats that didn;t allow much manipulation just plain old? Why don't we have more mix masters? I don't think djiing skills have anything to do with money and the size of the scene, just practice. Isn't it time for some real talent to emerge? I want to hear more than awesome music. I want to hear it being played.

Sorry for the rant there just had to get that out of my system. Now I'm gonna go out looking for some cdj's

peace out...           "Just as every skill is strengthened by practice, so is every bad habit made worse by repetition."

hey man,

in my opinion i'd rather no touches to a track. In fact i really dont like the whole creative dj thing, id rather a tune be played and just mixed good and eq'd correctly. If the track is already good why put un-needed effects in? i think it ruins what the whole journey of the track is meant to be. Its just something to do when youve got everything beatmatched and ready to go and youve smoked your ciggie

cheers.

I like using effects, but only during the mix, cos it makes the mix more interesting, not while the track is playing, cos thats not realy creative.

But, I play progressive, where every track starts with a kick, and you can hold it in a mix for 2-3 minutes, therefore I like the effects to spice things up a bit.

Korg Kaospad is a nice tool, has 100s of effects, like delays, pitch bend, reverse (this one's great!)

Every dj has his own style, thats whats important.

I play in a group that does something pretty uniqe.

A dj, a drummer and a guy running a rack of synths / effects.

Its all midi synced to the bpm of the track that's playing, so it works out pretty well.

Here's more info.

If you play with traktor ar abelton live, ppl accuse you of playing Mp3 and have some idea that pioneer has the best D/A converters available on the market.

I done traktor sets for a few years, and only do it because I'm stubborn and don't care what people say, but it's a struggle to get over peoples prejudice.
Maybe I'm not the shockingly good either, but for anyone wanting to push the limits in DJ'ing that seems like a major problem.

I used to play with those pioneer cdj´s, a Korg Kaoss Pad and a Filterqueen. it gives you a quite good range of effects.

but, as orbit mentioned, psytrance needs not much of effects, those were good to techno and other styles.

cheers!!!

Pixel&Domestic use these effects all the time VERY effectively. But usually, EQs are more than enough since psytrance has (or is supposed to have) a story in it already.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

As in most industries...its not the skills you have, its who you know...

Some of the best djs i know are not with labels and do it for the love of it and practice all the time...the label djs are often terrible.

Yet there are djs out there who are excellent, including Dimitri, Matan and Tristan. True masters of their craft.

imho, creativity can come by simple things like proper eqing, and simple chorus / echo effects. You won't notice much difference, but the little difference that you feel can really be worthwhile the whole effort (which in other words means the dj should know the track well and should have practised all this)

ok ok I know that most psytrance has a lot of effects already. Forget the effects. I'm not talking about effects just for the sake of toying with them. I'm also not talking about taking tracks and totally changing them or screwing them up alltogether. I don't like it either if a dj is too cocky and just over does it. What was talking about is PLAYING, not just plaing out the tracks. It's kind of hard to explain I guess, but what I wan't is to come back from a party and remember a dj for his skills not just for wicked music. I mean face it if you just want the music played out the way it is, why not just put on a winamp playlist and forget the whole dj concept. A lot of the times the person standing at the decks at the party is an artist who's giving a dj set. That artist may have exellent music taste and the best tracks but he/she is not a proffecional dj, rather had to learn the basics in order to get more gigs. And don't tell me that it's supposed to be all about the music and the dj should not be noticed at all. I'm not supporting the idea of having the whole dj cult or dj divas. Still a performance can come from more than a live act. I hope you get my drift.           "Just as every skill is strengthened by practice, so is every bad habit made worse by repetition."
