hello, i was wondering if any of you use creative hardware for writting music. for example, im currently hacking up my Game Boy (the first version) to be MIDI controlled and use in songs. Also, my room mate has a "Speak and Spell" that he connected to a theremin (i think thats how you spell it, its the light sensitive meter that changes the sound). does anyone else use this type of stuff?

haha random combinations!
I don't think a theremin is controlled by light though; I thought that a theremin was controlled by heterodyning (similar to ring modulation)using the movement of the hand to combine two frequencies (high and low) to get the central oscillating sound... I used one in a contemporary music performance ...

however, in terms of random combinations i spent many hours in the physics department in my school using a DTMF tone generator wired into a small speaker that forced the sound through tightened springs inside a perspex tube haha... weird sounds came from the other end especially if you shook the tube

Peace

I used to have a MIDI xylophone I built which was handy.
Just a bunch of 16 wooden pieces with piezo membranes under and a trig to midi box.
You could then set them up in the scale you where working in and hammer away to make quite nice leads with it.
Or of course use it for drumming.
Nothing that wierd and special, but it's cheap and easy to build and can be very nice change from always using a kb.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Nothing beats the throat.
You can really go wild with that instrument. And it's free!

and also an alesis product based on it:

That sounds interesting, could you explain that a bit more detailed (what's a trig to midi box, what are piezo membranes?)

Piezo membranes is little round metal discs that can be used as a microphones.
Should be possible to get from a well assorted electronics part shop.
They are very cheap...it was about 10 yrs ago I built it and then they was like $0.5 each.
I just put them on a rubber mat and then a quite thin wooden piece on top of each.
Then you just pull cables from them that connects directly to the trig to MIDI box.

I don't know of any trig to midi boxes on the market now.
Mine is an old roland model with 16 inputs. I know that Alesis had some rack drum modules that had trig inputs that was not very expensive a few years back but don't know if they are available new still.
But if you are lucky you should be able to find a SH box of some sort that will do the job cheaply.

You can of course stick the piezo elements under a rubber mat if you like to use drumsticks and have more like regular pads.
The nice thing about using the wooden pieces like a xylophone is that it made it possible to use them more hand drumming style.
I took some paper clips and made little caps to put on the fingers and got a very nice and velocity sensitive response.

If you want to build one yourself, feel free to PM me if there is anything that is unclear.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

I made a two VCO FM synth (no filter, envelope, LFo...etc, just the VCOs and a small amplifier) from Intesil chips for my electronics class. Had to use screwdrivers to modulate the pitch and frequency modulation amount, but recorded the output and used it in one of my tunes.
