I usually start with a preset, as I'm not good enough to start from a -INIT- patch and build the sound I want.
Plus, I usually don't have a clue about the kind of sound I want (and even if I do I don't know how to create it), so I usually browse through presets with a MIDI loop playing, and see what's sounding good, then I modify it to make it sound as good as possible.

when i first started and i had no ideia what synth was i used to use PRESETS.. nowadays its very RARE to use a PRESET...
For the drums i use samples, never created my own collection of pieces of drums... and i never use LOOPS too...
my tip bout the synths to start a track : load like 4 different synths... load the INITIAL preset from all of them ....
Now they ll all quite sound the same coz they are in the initial patch.... create a melody with those 4 sinths together...like if they were the same sinth.... now when u have a cool melody start tweakin the sounds till u get a nice link beetween them...
and now u are gonna have 4 different new presents too

I don't understand, you mean create a nice melody in MIDI, then copy-paste it to all 4 VST channels ? |

no no
sorry bout it..im going to try to explain better..
load 4 sinths in 4 different midi
and then create a cool midi melody which each note of this melody s bein played in one frmo the 4 different midi:
ex:
vanguard: A -------- A
Zeta ++ : ---A#-------A#
vanguard: --------B------- B
Albino : ------G -----------G
the 4 sinths are in the initial patch so they will be all lookin the same .. .well not really the same coz the initial patch from albino differs from vanguard that differs from zeta but its gonna not be SO different..
and lets say that this melody s soundin COOL....
now start tweakin the 4 synths till u get a nice feeling beetween the notes..a connection beetween them..and u ll get a nice BASE To build the music...
maybe this tecnic can give u guys an insight..if you could not understand again tell me that i ll try to explain again lol
ps: the ex is just an ex lol dont try to copy it as tuturial

That's a nice technic, I'll surely give it a try !
BTW, on something somewhat unrelated (and a bit noobish, again), how can I create this kind of INIT sound on a Little Phatty ? |

To put this idea even further, you could route all those to one group channel with some effects, that way you will add consistent fx to different sounds within one melody. Just dawned on me reading this Will try myself

My first synth was the Doepfer analog modular at Uni. It has no memory and every time someone was done using it, they'd take all the patch leads out.
So I learned to make all my sounds from scrath and continued to do so when I bought my own Doepfer and Analog Systems modulars.
I still make all my kicks, bass patches, leads, a lot of FM effects and most of my stabs and pads from scratch. Even when I use soft synths.
For top end I use samples, mainly from the TR-909/808, Dr Dre's sampler instruments and then I have apple loops for the drum loops.
Peace out.

u mean send all the sinths to the same fx channel so they get all the same effects?

I tend to use one or very similar midi files for some lead parts. An example of this is on Clear Skies which is the first tune on http://www.myspace.com/discohooligans
At the 3:42 mark there are 4 patches coming in, a Jupiter 8, a minimoog and two ES2 patches. The ES2 patches are playing the exact same midi file and the Jupiter 8 and minimoog are playing the same midi file between them, which is a slightly different one than the midi file the ES2 patches are playing, although you can't really tell.
I don't route them to the same effects buss though. I have different tight reverb plates and slight flanger modulation one one of them and generally have some slight detuning from patch to patch. So that it sounds like one big synth with some of the sequencing notes varying for movement.
I generally like massive solid riffs in my tunes, instead of whishy washy leads and effects.
Peace out.

Vermeee i meant send all those channels to one group channel with whatever fx you like as inserts, it will play those synths in one channel through set of fx you choose, you're left with more resources+fx like delay will be same for all synths (making it sound consistent)
