Creating good percussion samples

Hello all,

Lately I've been exploring the art of creating a good percussion sound, utilizing the Map feature in Battery2. I really like being able to assign different samples to different velocity ranges, I feel that it gives a very 'live' feel to the hits and makes playing the kits more fun.

Up until this point I've been using samples that I've found (filesharing, online, etc) but would *really* like to design my own from scratch. Basically I can find a ton of 808 and 909 rims, but most of them sound so dated that I cringe when I hear them. I'd really like to design my own, but I don't know where to start in terms of creating a range of sounds for a single percussive instrument at different velocities.

Are there any programs geared towards this?

I've played with Attack, but I wasn't sure what I should be tweaking to create 'harder' and 'softer' versions of the same hit. I know that harder hits tend to be louder, and to distort the pitch some, and possibly ring longer, but it really felt like I was fumbling in the dark.

Anyone have any advice/insight on this?

I know that good drum kits come with these sounds pre-programmed, but I want to understand what's going on behind the scenes as far as the sound engineering goes so I can start to tweak it.

Thanks!

I should note: what I'm really interested in making are rims/hihats/snares, not so much kicks.

Haha, twisted Great idea. Any binary will qualify for snare after proper filtering.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me
