Creating Acid effects

Hi I am new to creating Psy trance but have been producing techno for about one and a half years. I am familiar with making basic acidy sounds with a 303 but.. How do you create those incredible psy acid effects which build then explode rah rah rah... I searched acid on this forum but as you can probably imagine... well i didnt find what i was looking for. still good though.

acid sounds come in different flavours depending on distortion and filter being used. maybe post an mp3 example of the sound u'r trying to a achieve...

acid sounds are recognisable by a few properties.
1) they are always monophonic
2) some notes slide, others don't, some notes are accentuated, others aren't (that's because of the 303 and the way it works)
3) they always sound harsh
So just make a very harsh sound (synths with aggressive osc's and crunchy filters are best), make a monophonic melody, and then play with the volumes, the portamento (most synths don't have a slide function so you will have to use automated portamento on those synths) and the filter, and you have acid... But you knew that already ofcourse...
making explosions is a question of the right automation at the right time and the correct change of melodies... The easiest way to build up to an explosion is to open or close the filter at the right moment... and then you have to change the melody to something with more drive then the previous one... or take the other approach, make a great melody for the climax, and then break it down for the parts before the climax.... Breaks are also very important for explosions.
But the most important thing for explosions, and that is something i suck at completely and that is the reason why my songs always fail, is the song structure of the whole song, if that is not exactly right, your perfectly good climax (explosion) will go to waste because the buildup to it was bad to begin with... The only solution i see for that problem is to use an existing song as a template for structure (so you make a break when that song breaks, you make a build-up when that song builds up etc) and then it will be right... Ofcourse, if you feel you can do better, then do so... And after a while, i hope (i'm not at that stage yet), you will learn how to make good structures yourself. |

some tips for getting that acid sound
distortion as some already wrote (saturation always worked for me)
phase shifting, flanger/phaser
filter, manually controlled or by lfo
buffer override (http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/audiounits.html) is nice to repeat and retrigger single notes.
reverse individual parts or single notes of your riff, apply reverb or any other effect and reverse it again.
send single notes to different delays. use them at will, for example just before a break and for example only delay the last note. you can vary the dry/wet level depending on your host.
just some ideas to give 303 sounds some spice.

sending only certain notes to delays is great tip btw. i used it for this short competition song:

created using audiorealism bassline + bunch of fx plugs. Limitations for the competition was only 3 different patterns and some 303-like synth (or the original!)
best notes to send are the ones that have high frequency content (high notes or high cutoff/resonance), because low notes won't be that distinguishable and probably just add some unwanted rumble. I sent notes that form chords, so you get nice harmonic atmospheric background.
Also if you use vst automation you can create really lively cutoff, resonance and distortion amount modulations not possible with lfo's or hardware synths (yes midi is nice but not ~ sample accurate)
long reverse delay/reverb is great for bringing the acid line in.
