I have been bothered with this idea for a while now:
Well record labels have their signature sound, like that texture or something, that makes all the artists sound similar, but not the same, at first i thought: well i have to establish guidelines for the composition, arrangement etc, of all tracks but that takes away the creativity from the process, given the fact that not only me was going to work on the project, but other artists as well and each of them with a different mind state.
So i got to the conclusion that the sound was going to be designed, and applied in the mix down stage, kinda like a rock band, they record, they send it to de mixing engineer (instead of mixing themselves) and send it to a mastering engineer.
In the mix down stage, we would apply our signature buses and stuff to make them all sound similar, like applying same stile compressors, a distinct snare sound (not replace, but enhance) some signature glitches here and there, u know like applying a final polish before its ready to be pressed.
and also with the mastering engineer, guide him the guidelines of what sound we want to achieve.
So that is my approach, but i would like to hear what you think about this, or have any tips n tricks u want to share
cheers |

Hm, I never noticed that artists from the same lable sound so similar....If I would be signed by a Lable, I would not want to give my tracks a feel or sound that is not from me...only for making things sound similar to others....
youre really sure this is a fact?
  My first track:

no, I'm not talking production wise, and its not a general fact, many labels do that, many don't, and its not stripping the soul away from your music, its more making it like "woo thats a good track i bet is from a (Insert record label name here) artist!" it retains the original intent of the track, while giving it that signature sound from the record label, and obviously this is all for the means of marketing, u know, like al marvel comics look the same (but are not, totally not).

I don't know if this is something that really goes on...
But I do wonder how zenon tracks all have such a similar character. |

I think that the artists from Wildthings records sound pretty similar, in my classification they pretty much define "mushroom funk" - EVP, Reality Grid (Alex Diplock), Archaic, Hoodwink, etc.
But that's the only label that comes to mind where I have noticed this trend.

He's talking about HIS signature sound as a mix engineer, not the signature sound of the artists he's mixing, which will be consistent between projects no matter who mixes them.
I say forget about trying to create your own signature sound; just write your own, honest music and it will happen naturally, as you express your own individual creativity in your own individual way. You do have your own creativity, don't you?
