The first virtual instrument built with the STEAM Engine, Omnisphere®, is set to be released September 15, 2008, and has a suggested retail price of $499 US. Future STEAM-based instruments are TBA.

If synth turns out to be half as good as their advertising skills it will be great. So far I've tested Atmosphere, Trilogy and Stylus and I don't use any of those regardless to the fact that cracks are available.
They do sound great, they have enormous capability, but I just don't like them because of lack of controls compared to some other plugs and vast amount of predefined presets and samples that turn tweaking mostly to browsing.

strange.. I use the stylus rmx and the atmosphere quite a bit... I even used to use the trilogy to for a while till I ran out of room. Funny enough, I use all these things for their intended purposes, but I also make some really interesting leads out of them... For instance, I barely use the original stylus remix library, I have made my own library of loops and stuff for it that I like to tweak with using their fx and whatnot...
I normally don't go for the rompler thing either, but I found that with a little bit of effort, you can really make something interesting out of the most mundane things.

Well,
it's really nice to see Spectrasonics developing it further... Native UB support has been of a wait !

I did not say that you can't do interesting stuff with it. I just don't like closed (or integrated) systems that depend on vast library and "probability" tools like chaos designer operating on "click until you hit the jackpot" philosophy.
I'm sure that you can make excellent stuff with that tools. I just don't like the integrated solutions... I believe that modular solutions offer much more results from much less resources.

Wow,
I want it too
Sounds interesting. I find it absolutely great that in this spectrasonics product finally you don't need to use the library but can work with own samples!
The arpeggiator is pretty similar to the one in the virus TI though. The Arp. didn't really impress me.
