i'm interested whether they're talking low shelf at 100 or a solid HPF. high passing at 100hz would sound like absolute shit 99% of the time.. unless, as has been mentioned, the bass from your kick/tail takes up most of that frequency range. but to be honest i don't think i've ever heard a track where this is the case, in any style of dance music. even with a really long kick you still need some bass notes to fill up the bar. 30-40 hz yes, maybe even 60 in some fullon tracks where the bass is pitched very high, but 100 would sound terrible |

btw as for whether club systems produce below 100 hz, ever heard space cat/pixel clear test signal at a club? "test number one, clean test signal, 40hz *insert earth shattering rumble*" |

Sometimes I make 3 basslines over eachother.
1st: from 28hz to 70hz
2nd: from 65hz to 150hz
3rd: from 140hz to 300hz

Kick does not have below 100hz either...both summing 100-125hz and nothing below, man, all I can say, is that I really dont like this type of mixing.

Well done Captain Obvious!
I said "at like 90Hz", an estimate if you excuse me for not being so exact, i was at work when i wrote it so i had no possibility to actually find the correct answer. Hope you forgive my ignorance
And just because you filter doesn´t mean you remove all freq under 100Hz, a 3 to 6dB cut's fairly nice to round of the bass.
And one more thing when i mean character for instance in my case i used alot of tube simulators , everything from tube preamp-simulators and tube-compressor-simulators which adds all that warmth we are so fond of but in my case it was a little to much so a the built in ableton filter gave that nice cut to give nice headroom in the mix

why now eveyone says 70hz-100hz? so 40hz is to shit now?
|

Don´t take it as a general rule that you apply on all basses, learn to use different techniques for different scenarios ( read diffrent bass-sounds and characters)

I agree with Colin here. I was talking with the producer from Astron awhile back, and he told me something like they always high-pass the bass around 125. I thought it was pretty ridiculous when I heard it, but after multiple 'are you serious man' s he held a straight face.
I got home and tried it and realized he must have been taking the piss out of me, as it took ALL of the meat out of the bass. They have a live drummer, so that might of been the reason, but I found it inapplicable to my own style.
I also agree with Vegetal though, that compression and effectors can beefen up your sound enough that cutting in the 90s or even up to the high 90s might be appropriate, but still its gotta fit the case. No general rule on this, unless you want to sound like ultra-plastic.
Psy bass is fast, so you have to account for that, but I've always been partial to a deep bass sound with lots of subs.

It's certainly a temptation I've felt after being asked the same question for the 20th time! Luckily though I've resisted so far.

When a buddy of mine first got Cubase and was trying to get into production, a well known SA producer who he was acquainted with said he''d show him the ropes...He promptly set the poor dude's project time signature to 3/4, told him to always keep it like that, said all Psy was written in 3/4 and went on his way. |

i spose if i had a pm system in my room id be able to tell if 40hz is wrong to 90hz
bla bla bla bla bla bla
i spose u could cut 90hz in the mix and give it an artifitial bottom when mastering no? to much confusion

I think it's also sometimes a case of people defending their territory against competition. There's only so much money to go round in the scene and people who rely on psytrance to pay their mortgages could possibly see new producers as a threat to their livelihoods.

come on now!
so they tell to people to HP @ 100hz ?
LOL come on mate..
they just would never pass your demo to the organizer , they will talk dirty on you , and they will not answer your requests to remix their music (or demand rediculus high prices for it). they will not wait extra hour and will try to get you off stage if "their time" has come regardless to when you start playin.. they will go and tell people that they are better blablabla.. but not about filters ?!$T%$%@#@$
