What is the best CPU type for audio work.
Do the 64bit AMD have any conflicts with software by being 64 Bit.
Anyway, what is the best CPU type you recommend without having software conflicts.
Thanks to all repliers. |

Not 'conflicts' specifically, but since OS and drivers for 64 bit stuff isn't really done yet, you aren't going to be taking full advantage of the 64 bit architecture.
Regardless, the fastest-rated CPUs being produced right now are manufactured as 64 bit chips, even if the current software out there is still running in 32bit mode.

don't jump on the 64bit hype, if it's 64bit it's ok, but don't specifically buy such a cpu. buy a dual core cpu (i have a dual core and can fully use both cores when making music). if it's amd or intel, buy what architecture you like.
more important is the chipsets which support the cpu you buy. so choosing a good mainboard is more important.
i liked the amd architecture (chip internal memory controller, core communication inside the chip) but then chose an intel cpu (no chip integrated memory controller, core communication over fsb) because of the mainboard (a good intel chipset is better than those nvidia nforce4 (sorry, crappy) chipsets). now i have a working machine, no hardware issues, no compatibility issues with uad or powercore. and no harddisk issues (remeber the nvidia nforce4 maxtor sata 2 issue?)
good luck! |

hey there,
Pentium4 or Athlon64 is the same, get highest clocked cpu you can afford, i would say one with fat l2 cache, like the prescott p4 or the san diego cores from amd.
beware cauz the cpu can be a very fat bastard, but you need a good chipset and memory, that is a desicive factor, i recomend for amd the NForce3, models like epox 9NDA3J, Gigabyte GA8KNS or the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. And if you go for a P4, try to get a 915 or 925 chipset. Dual channel memories, always.

the 955X chipset is also great (on the P5WD2 _premium_ (passive chipset cooling)) |

so you say 64bits isn't a good buy? won't the 64bits technology be used in the future? i recently bought an amd64 3200+ and i wanted to know if the 64 bits technology is going to be useful. oh but don't tell me about dual core... that's too much money for me i'm a student i already bought the best thing i could |

it wil be used in the future, but your pc isn't 64 bit. Why? your hard disks are 32 bit, your RAM is 32 bit, your busses are 32 bit. So in fact only your CPU is 64 bit. That's why we say that a real 64 bit PC does not exist (well, they do, but only in the server world, alpha's are 64 bit, HP4000's are 64 bit, etc...) Also, up til now, the only real 64 bit operating systems are unix or linux (ok windows just released they're first 64 bit operating system, but up till now, only unix and linux had OS's like that) |

Not on the new PC I am building: 2x128 bit memory, 2x64bit PCI, 2x64 bit CPU. But yeah it is a server motherboard with two Opteron processors.
Get a 64 bit processor for futureproofing. Get AMD if you want speed, avoid nForce4 chipsets. Actually avoid PCI-e if you want to be safe. (Or do alot of research before you decide).
