cpu question: DX or VST?

Boobytrip: Sonar 5 has both. You can run a 32 bit float or a 64 bit float sound engine and you can run in a 32 or 64 bit OS.

The 64 bit audio engine works for anyone: DX plugins support 64 bit interfacing as standard and CakeWalk have created a bit-bridge to interface with VST plugins. (VST doesn't support 64 bit). This all runs on a 32 bit OS like Windows XP.

The 64 bit OS part is still limited by external factors: Your soundcard manufacturer needs to provide 64 bit drivers and plugin developers need to upgrade their plugins to 64 bit.

All the native Sonar plugins have been ported to 64 bit and if you have an RME or M-audio soundcard which have 64 bit drivers, you can install WinXP x64 and run in 64 bit but alot of your plugins won't work yet ...

Basicly CakeWalk have bitten the bullit and removed the chicken and egg problem from the equation. Now other software developers have a good reason to spend time and energy on porting their software to 64 bit.

CakeWalk rulez. They care about their customers. They listen to their needs. They don't treat their customers as criminals (no dongle which always gets cracked anyway). They admit when there is a bug in their software and provide free bug fixes. They quite often add functionality to their software in free upgrades. Their .0 software releases are usually stable and if bugs are found, they release bug fixes within 1 or 2 weeks. Their head engineer even answers questions in their forum. And no I don't work for them. Lol.

So Hayez, what is your problem with Sonar?

you're right about all the tech stuff, but I think that 64 bit processsing (not addressing) is just waste of time now. You will hear the diffrence only in rare cases, and it's definetly doesn't include any psy trance
the fact is that most people can't differ between an mp3 and 24\96 wav, and that isn't going to change in the near future, in fact it's just getting worse.

My problem with Sonar is personal. DAW is the producers instrument and I don't like that one. for example:
- I hate their user interface
- I can't do anything intuitively, I always have to look in the help
- I always get all kinds of stupid dialogs

I'm not saying it's a bad program, it's not. I'm just saying that I rather not use DXi automation or 64 bit in place of a program I like better.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Russolo, 1913
