I was in Shanghai for a coupla weeks and got talking to a dude who runs a print shop for some big pop labels i China who was saying that the cost ofprinintg a good inside book and nice didg pack box is dirt cheap, inclduing the prinitng of the cd her said it is much less than $1.00 US... so just want to know why so many labels ahve really skimp album art? I mean, if you put some nice cover work I really think it'd help sales, yet so often yo get a list of names and a few thankyous... even some quick info or photo's of the artist(s) would be soething cool...

just wondering..

Think a little. That's in China mate. I can asure you it's not that cheap in Europe or USA and it's not that easy both physical but indeed also tax wise to just have it done in China or Asia for that matter.

And as long almost nobody buy music I can easily understand why labels have to cut down on production costs!

Journey Man just check prices in Europe for a digipack with a nice artwork and booklet inside and you will see why labels dont invest so much money on this thing.

P.S Even if a European label prints its cds in China its not easy and moneywise to export them out of the country because of high taxation and transportation costs.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

But on the other hand: when people who do buy the CD's don't get anything extra compared to the free illegal download, the labels don't exactly encourage buying the CD's either

Some dilemma.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I can't stand buying a cd and getting a thin one layer cover as a booklet... I feel cheated!

Hey hey hey... to all the labels who responded I'm not trying to have a go at anybody, I was interested in finding some answers... I think most labels have great covers, just once in a while I get cover that is pretty dissapointing. If I have insulted anybody in anyway I apologise because that was not my intent...

it's just that I love to buy originals and one reason is for the cover deisgns to pu ton display...

anyway I'm not gonna get involved in a fight, obviously costs of production are not open for discussion so I'll say sorry and maybe we can take a group deep breath and chill out

well just my 2 cents worth. when I buy a cd I put it in my case and look at the cover art for like....a few minutes ...then it goes in the -just jewel cases- pile. I think art on the cd itself is more valuble than any 8pg book with pictures that wont fit into my cd case. Im a graphic designer and I love art. I just dont take it everywhere with me. I do however like cds that have say like mini posters in them. You can make it cheap just leave something cool that will work like a single peice of art that is not imprisoned by the jewel case.           http://soundcloud.com/djkiva

Hmmm ok but I have all my cd's stacked in a great stand in my studion and you can see all the cases side by side and 300+ cd cases stacked side by side along the wall do look quite impressive...

Then why say it if there's no fight? Idont get your point? And why send me a message telling me to chill? Where did I ever attack you? I gave you some facts that things aren't so cheap as in China. If you dont want answers that go against your idea then why post here?

Sorry for the offtopic. Back to the topic.
