Hi. I've been remixing tracks for quite a while now. What I wan't to know is do you need to speak with the original creator of the track to remix it or aren't the songs copyrighted?
Thankz for your replies

In europe, all material is copyrighted by the creator...           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

If a music or any material that you trying to use is 100 years old, then it is considered to be a public domain, and you don't have to talk with the original creator, well you can't even if you wanted to he he

anyway, when remixing (newer stuff) it's always good idea to talk with the creator first and if the track is copyrighted then to a record label that holds the lisence for the original track, to avoid any future issues and problems you might get.

but out of repsect to the artist, talk to him/her first

Copyright persists until 70 years after the authors death (at least in Denmark)           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

unfortunately, yes...

Any sample, however long it is (even a one-hit) is copyrighted. (and it doesn't matter how many FX are put on it, it's still a copyrighted sound)

Know a guy who works as a music copyright expert, part of his job is reverse engineering FX on tracks so that the original sampe can be heard, however long it is, so record labels can contact the user...

still, psytrance is relatively underground, so samples don't really matter

Consider also that all film/movie samples of vocals are ALSO under copyright, by both the film production company, the actor/s (whose voice it is) AND the writer... But everyone uses them anyway           www.myspace.com/beat_nik

NikC, correct,
usually license holders let it slide if track ain't going multi-platinum. but still, if it catches the attention of involved party, it may cause some problems. some sub record labels(signed to big ones) go through the trouble of clearing out the sample but still, the cost for that usually comes from artists pocket.           www.venomous2.com

Hehe, just f*ck up the samples so much they can't recognize them

But there is something called the "Quotation law" or something like that, that makes it alright to use samples to some extend... however this law is a bit vague in its words, so it is a bit unclear where it works and where it doesn't           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

thanks, but what if I recreate a part of the song? it's never exact, but almost... i've already created melodies from scratch and then later on I'ved heard them on other tracks, without releasing my track.

Why not sample whole psytrance tracks like the rest ? You can be sure that the artist doesn't have the money to sue you
