Creative Commons licensing is one way, all you need to do is include some kind of document that says what license you want, I don't know how legally binding the license is, or if its recognized as legally binding by every country, or if you could sue someone for breaching your license, cuz its pretty much 'this is mine, you can use it for ___ , but must ____ if you do'.
There are professional songwriter and composer organizations like ASCAP, Im not sure how that works though, I imagine its something like attaining a patent, meaning lawyers and legalese...

to copyright you need to fill forms, pay fees, include 3 copies of the music cds.. bla bla bla... too much buro
every country has it's own entity.
on books, there are writers that copyright their work before it gets published. so they'll receive for every editor that publishes their books.
on underground/ indie music, copyright is more for protection and not so much for profit
usually labels take care of that.. but you gotta be carefull, because sometimes they take all the legal rights over your tracks..
is always good to protect your work.
if you plan to share your music for free, make it on places like ektoplazm. everything is published under a creative commons license, it's listed, it's there. |

Not at all. You sign up with them and fill out a form when you make a new tune and that's it really.

There I's something called the songwriters vault, here in Canada, you join for 20 bux a year and lisence ( copyright) 10 tracks for like a 100 bux. It works differently depending on the country you are in. Australia has yet a completely different system, you pay next to nothing for copyrighting but once you make money with it the country gets a percentage...In Germany you have yet another system, best is to use google...
ASCAP, I think you cannot copyright music with them, they are in charge if getting royalties fir music once it has been copyrighted and registered with them... I am with Socan, ascaps affiliate and the same thing like them, here in Canada and that is how it works here.., Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Idk, to me it all sounds like more effort than its worth, and a bit capitalistic...
I just mentioned ASCAP because I always saw it on teh top of sheet music we played in the school band
My bottom line is I don't feel that its a good thing to assign a dollar value to my artwork, if anyone wants to try and copy me, they're welcome, but I have the original project files that prove that its my work, and I would rather spend the least amount of mental effort worrying about money possible, ultimately the fulfillment comes from new creations and new ideas for me, my work isn't about having a finished track so much as it is about creating something new and surprising. Not to say I feel my tracks are worthless throwaways when theyre done, its just that whenever I do finish something, I usually think, 'well, what do I do now?'
I guess I jsut don't really feel that Ill ever make any money from psytrance specifically, but I would love to work as a studio engineer, to me thats a realistic way that I could make money from music, and in that situation Im sure I would be more concerned with copyright and whatnot. But I just think of trance as what heals my soul and fulfills the deep urges, something deeply personal, thinking of it in capitalist terms just feels wrong...
