Should I copyright my music before sending it to labels or posting it on websites?
If so, how should I do it?
Help will be appreciated..

Well, isnt it nowadays enough to have all the daw files etc to show that you are the artist in case people steal your music?
No need to send an closed stamped envelope to yourself anymore right? Or make it official with any copyright organisation which will cost more money than a track will probably ever make.

You never send it to yourself you send it to the artist right organization I hope every releasing artist is wise enough to join. NO there's no need for that anymore but there are still so many other ways you can end up in legal disputes over your original music.

One thing it kept in my mind for a while is the following:
I post a track in soundcloud under my artist name right?
2 years after that some bozo comes arround and says the track is his.
I have all the files and the track posted 2 years before he even mentioned it.
Who wins in this case scenario?

listen to the guy who knows first hands what can happen.
if he want to tell details here again its his choise..
since i remember the story but cant remember where i heard it from..
anywayz you can lose alot from sending music to labels and signing draconian contracts just to get released.
there are planty of simple non binding contracts , and samples should always be partial if u really care about all that

this is a digital internet age we are living in.
better to find new models for music rather than trying to fight a lost cause.
we are talking underground electronic music here, no one is gonna make a million bucks off that.

And what will you do if you one day realize your music is in a movie selling millions or in an international car advertising campaign but you "forgot" to copyright your music? It's actually happened to careless artists more than once.

but how likely is that to happen?
if someone has money for an international ad campaign they probably have money to pay for the music they use.
i had one album copyrighted and registered in israel's music organization. not very expensive but did cost a fee.
was out in 2007, this is underground psy. no radio charts no mtv no hollywood... where are royalties going to come from?

It i likely. Just look at Moby. He was a very unknown artist (outside the electronic scene) until the day Jaguar used one of his tunes for a worldwide campaign. Imagine he had not bothered to copyright his music
Suit yourself its your music and your loss if it happens. I just find it silly not to use those 5-.10 minutes it takes. And find it to be very wrong to advise new artists not to care about their legal rights. www.beatagency.dk |
