hello everyone,
for some reason i just cant get my "mute breaks" (like the ones in every fullon track) to sound good,i use the mute in the main stereo output but its like the sound starts a few milli seconds after so i dont get the "boom" after the mute.
just wanted to know how you guys do it.
a good example of what i mean is in sesto sentos "cookie stealer track |

Try automating the volume fade instead.
Or just put automation a bit earlier.

When that happens to me usually it's because I haven't used very detailed automation and it actually starts later. Zom in as far as it gets. In cubase it is done with the two sliders at the bottom right corner. See when it actually starts. If it actually starts at the right time, then go to the top left corner and change the quantitize to 1/64. Then automate so that the volume is 0 at 1/64th of a note before you want it to start and set it at volume you want where it actually starts. Hope you understand what I am trying to say. If that doesn't help, maybe you are using some hardware with latency. Or you are using some kind of loop that isn't cut properly. Are only some parts starting later, or do you loose the initial boom from the kick and cymbal? If you could explain some more it would be easier to help. |

thanx guys
ill try automating the volume, maybe it will work better.
i loose only the initial boom from the kick and cymble.
i use quantinize so theirs no way i put the mute or the track a bit later.
does the mute work for you guys good?
anyway i think that it has to do with with the fact that i mostly use midi and not audio.
what do you think?
you guys try using the mute at 1/16th like three or four in a row anywhere in one of your tracks and see that it isnt clean.
listen to the track i listed obove to hear what im talking about. |

Got the same problem with midi. When I record them they are or time, but before I record them they play a bit out of time. What I do is copy what I've done 1/64th of a note before they should start and they start on time. And then when I whant to record them I put them back again. If you use mac, there is a vst you can use that you put it on your track and it makes your hardware use the sequancer's latency compensation. Haven't used it, but sounds good.

uiu this happen because u have latency in your sound card .. for ex .. to make mutes .. in on kick before the start again .. i make with automation ... and i put on swooosh go up .. and it finish in the before the last kick .. mute and pammm ... the automation ... u need to amplifie your image of the arrange .. to put it with big defenition .. then let it cuted until the start of the track again ... sometimes some delays .. just dont let it happen .. so .. then after tthe track is finished .. p0ut the track on wave lab or SF .. and make the mute in that part easy hum ? :Ç

i think dark psy's idea is the best .
this is exactly the kind of break i was talking about.
what ill do is not to put a mute.
but to leave it like it is and when i finish the track.
ill cut that part in wavlab or cubase. |

Or...
you can also just Gate your master. Not sure how it's done in Cubase though.

If you want mute breaks you could also export the final track in successive segments to audio (by using the locator-markers). When you load these segments into a new audio-track you don't have the effects of the previous segment of the track in your audio and also, you can load the segments into a sampler or transformer and make some really weird meta-effects like a tape slowing down etc.
If you want to gate the master channel in cubase i think you should load a midi-gate as an insert-effect on your master fader, and load that midi-gate as an instrument on a midi-track in your sequencer window. Then you draw a note on that track when you want to gate. make sure the 'note on'/ 'note off' and ahr knobs of the midi-gate are in the appropriate positions. Midi-gate can be found under 'dynamics' fx |

just an idea... but its worked for me, just export the bar(s) which you want to have the mute break in from your sequencer into wavelab or soundforge, gate or mute that bit... then import it back into your sequencer, solo that wave file for that bar
and BAM!!
(this also means that you can add abit of reverb or do some audio manipulation within the sequencer... i like it because it keeps it in the mix!)
Peace X |
