hello there, anyone knows if there's out there any software that turns a wav file into midi?
sounds crazy i know but i'm not asking about complicated audio files or converting to the exact note of the sound and that stuff...just writting down a midi file where each sound of the wav is represented as a note (any note) in the piano roll.
For instance i want to record live percussion and then convert the file into midi and put on some samples to play instead of my shitty perc. sound ...wouldn't it be nice ?

Melodyne is capable of representing audio - both pitched and unpitched (eg percussion) as pitches on a piano-roll style editor; I'm not sure if it will actually convert it to MIDI though. Audio has to be monophonic (one note at a time) for it to work.

I'm sure software exists that will do what you ask, but I don't know off the top of my head what it is!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Logic can do that since many years.
It is of course not so precise, but on clear monophonic material it does an ok job, and for rythms it wourks totally fine.
You can also take the groove of an audio and apply to your track and vice versa.
I remember there was a spearate piece of software that might work better, but can't remember what is was called.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Cubase is also capable of extracting timing from recorded audio and imposing it on other audio and MIDI parts. I don't think it will extract pitch information though.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

ProTools and Sonar do it to. I think DP and Samplitude do too but I'm not entirely sure.

In Sonar it is the function "Extract timing".
