I only bounce things to do edits that are otherwise impossible to do.
Tweaking synth parameters and EQ, reverb send...etc automation is part of my mixing process. So I leave all of that stuff in real time. Yes I have fallen into my own "trap" of tweaking things for ever, but I'd rather have total control and sometimes waste time, than not. I mean even bouncing things in audio and then copying over all the plug ins from a software instrument track, to an audio track (duplicating a software instrument track cannot copy over to an audio track), is a time wasting process it self, especially when you have 40+ channels of soft synths.
Peace out.
Peace out.

That`s what I thought and what I do, good to hear that an experienced tweaker does the same

It is DEFINITELY not 'removing' possibilities - it is just another method with another set of tools. I know that I spent months and months in the beginning where I didn't use any audio at ALL, it was ALL MIDI.

Its not removing possibilities, and there is no right or wrong way of going about this.
I remember when I had a full hardware studio and everything was audio as recorded every synth patch in, since the only synth I had when I first started was a Doepfer modular, which meant no memory and only one mono voice. So as soon as I got a nice sound, I hit record!
It was fun working like that. Its fun working the way I do now.
Peace out.

+1 on what Disco Hooligans said.
Im using a daw like a tape recorder now, just record to audio everything and mangle it , resample whatever ! thats owing that i do mostly hardware recordings and sometimes its quite difficult to get a nice lead in a single pass for the stuff i like. I think if i were working with vst instruments id prefer to keep everything in midi, both have their place , you can do almost the same with automation it really depends on your workflow. Guys like Amon Tobin (if u listen his music) is kept entirely in Midi he stated and he was amazed how some guys worked with audio , sequencing small fragments on the grid, each to their own =)

Thank you,it sound very good I was thinking you might use more channels at the same time somewhere but now I understand this concept so and can imagine it well with that many channels.Nice work!

thanks! i've also experimented with having upwards of 8 synth tracks playing at the same time (excluding percussion), but it's getting really hard to do a decent mix when your track is that busy. i guess i'll shut up before we'll derail the thread any further. |
