when u open the key editor (midi) in cubase sx2 you have a controller's menu with many options...
does anyone use anything there except velocity and pitchbend and maybe panning? there are so many options:
modulation, poly pressure, aftertouch, breath etc etc etc...

Like Colin said, it's useful for external hardware.
When using VSTi's, better use the automation. Much more accurate and doesn't need to assign anything.

I don´t know why, but I just can´t make the automation of some VST´s.... For example: I tried to make the automation of Spectrasonics Atmosphere as usual: press W button, then play and mess the knobs... Don´t know why, but when I press R to read, there´s no automation track for what I did!
So for this cases I use another midi track, choose the right "controller" for what I want, and draw the automation. I must say that it´s not so easy to draw as on automation track, but it´s the only way I found to automate this vst... Can u help me Colin???

Yes, I can, as a matter of fact.
There is a MIDI plugin called 'MIDI Control' which you use as an insert on a MIDI track. This allows you to assign up to 8 controllers to act as destinations for SX automation; these controllers appear in the MIDI Contol insert automation track for the MIDI track just like any other automation. You can use up to 4 MIDI COntrol plugins at a time, giving you access to up to 32 MIDI controllers.
Alternately you could get SX3, which makes all MIDI controllers available as automation destinations as a matter of course.

Thanks Colin!
This MIDI plugins sounds interesting.... But much more interesting is the SX3 that I hope has something like Logic´s automation...
Cheers!

ok, just to make sure that i got this midi control thing right.
i have a midich. with lets say discovery as plug in.
now i load this midi-control plugin into a midi insert, and now i see 8 slots, where i can define any parameters of my discovery.
at the left side, there are some fields, where i can select the midi channel ???
if i program my modulationwheel of my keyboard with ch. 1, and i select channel one in connection with f.e. the volume parameter on my midi control, then i should be able to control my volume with the mod.wheel?
right?
the question now is, why doesn't it work ^^
do i have any aditional settings, should the midi track be on read, ... ?

The left side is where you change data values for each controller, not where you set the MIDI channel!
If you want to use the mod wheel to send controller 7 messages (volume) you need to be using the Input Transformer, which is just like the Logical Editor except it works on real-time MIDI input. You can get to it from the button above the 'e' button at the top of the Inspector for the MIDI track, or from the button immediately above the pan control in the Channel Settings window.

Fake brit! He drinks tequilas.
Anyway, i use modulation(except of basic midi functions like velocity, pitch and panning) sometimes for Vsti or hardware, rest are not that important for me.
I process most of midi/vsti to audio and do the work in there even panning, i keep repetitive leads and bassline as midi, rest audio with all it abilities. |
