Controller keyboard with bi-directional communication?

I've been looking around a lot and doing lots of reading, but it seems that one thing is never really part of the description of the features of a controller.

What I am looking for, is a keyboard with rotary encoders, that don't send values depending on the board but depending on the software, i.e. relative and not absolute values.

Example: The volume on a soft-synth is set to 100. When I turn the knob on the board, I want the volume to start moving from 100 and not jump to somewhere else and move from there. With old controllers(my first was Keyfax PhatBoy), I always found that to be an impractical pain when opening files I've been working on or switching between devices.

Any suggestions for devices - I'm looking for a 49 key, faders are not important, pads would be nice.

Novation is out of the question as I'm not happy with them - long story.

I did really like the keys on the Novation and also want something with after touch.

I'd be really happy if anyone has any alternative suggestions.           Keep it real - Use less hardware

If you're not happy with Novation, I'd recommend:

The MPK was the only alternative to a Novation that I could find as well.

I had been looking at the new Axioms, but have also had bad luck with M-Audio in the past. Their support ignored right from the beginning as opposed to Novation, who started to ignore me after I got my keyboard back from warranty repairs - unfixed.

Things is that the Remote Compact are available relatively cheap at the moment(end of line/clearance sales). I got mine at the lowest price I could find. With shipping, the MPK would set me back nearly twice as much as I paid for the Novation at a local dealer(where I won't shop again).

Perhaps I should just cool down, save some more money and see what's available later.           Keep it real - Use less hardware

I know that the new Axioms from M-Audio got some sort of an attempt to recreate automap, but not sure if they got encoders.

Don't let Novation's support disappoint you - usually their units work just perfectly and you don't need the service.
Recently I had a few mail exchanges with them which was very nice, they responded rapidly and helped me as much as they could.
I just think you had a really bad luck with this.

Yeah, I have to admit that after sleeping over it, the Nocturn 49 has moved to the top of my list.

The MPK has quite a few things I don't need (I'm happy with Reason's arp for example) and after using Automap with Reason... .

But I'm not buying again for now as my partner is having her first solo exhibition on Malta end of October, so some of the cash I got back is being used to buy art supplies. Hopefully she will sell enough and I'll be able to get monitors and room treatment on top of a keyboard           Keep it real - Use less hardware

I just got a Roland Cakewalk A-300 Pro (which is a new Edirol, but with a new brand name). Works amazing with Sonar's ACT - but I guess that you aren't using Sonar so it's not going to help you.

Just out of curiosity, what sells you on the Nocturn vs the SK MKII series?

Nocturn VS SL MKII - the price.

SL MKII also has more than I need(like the MPK) and I like having pitch bend and modulation as separate controls.

@ Mike A: To answer your question from the other thread - I bought the last unit they had. Just glad to have finished with that dealer and gotten my money back without writing registered letters or going to a lawyer.           Keep it real - Use less hardware
