It really depends on how you use Live.
For example the Xone 3D or MPD 24 would be totally crap for the way I use Live, while for others it's might be right for their needs.
The only way to get a controller that precisely fits your needs would be to build your own...unless you are extremely lucky to find one that happens to have just the right amount of buttons and knobs with a layout that makes sense.
What you really need to do is to sit down and think how you want to structure your set.
It's hard to get it right without actually trying it out first, but at least try to figure out how many knobs and buttons you need and how they should be laid out.
For me it was really between the ReMote Zero SL, Bitstream 3x and the BCR-2000.
In the end the BCR was the closest match I could find. It has sufficient number of knobs and buttons and the layout is very close to ideal for my setup.
For mouseless operation I use a A4Tech X7 G100 gamers keypad which I'm extremely happy with since the layout of the keys are almost exactly like if I would have designed it myself to fit my needs.
I printed out labels for the keys, covered them with transparent tape and glued them on.
I can really recommend getting some kind of keypad for duties like browsing and loading samples, triggering, looping, cueing etc.
It sucks standing fiddling with a mouse and hardly no controllers has enough buttons to be used on it's own for mouseless operation.
The only option for me would have been two Faderfox LX2's which would have been a lot more clumsy to set up, more expensive and less convenient.

happy actually it doesn-t take much space regarding how much room organizers settle for you on some decks... and handy to travel also.
sorry for the hands with big fingers, maybe they will think about a XL version.

I used to keep my equipment fit for live situations.
My sequencer is Ableton Live 7, controlled by Novation X- Station, which is quite really nice for that. Novation Nocturn makes life easier at home, for really less money (paid 70€?).
Since i got my Waldorf Blofeld i have to think about buyin an external audio interface, which i hadnt, cause my X- Station has.
But now problem is that i have to connect Blofeld through Audio In of the X- Station, cause its not playin Audio through the USB connector like Access Virus TI does, which really su*#s in caes of Feedback noizes i cant cut out. Thought will be fixed in future, but as Holger from Waldorf told me, will be not able in this price category. Anyway nice machine =)
To get some live feeling in live situations i will prefer to use my Korg padcontrol, cause i got no money for buyin nice Akai Sampler. Anyway, padcontrol works really nice with Ableton, so thats my choice......
Think the question is, what ur gonna do or want to do in your livesets. what will be the basic point. if you just wanna do everything live, u should program all your sounds on different midi chanels to your keyboard and controllers, any effect u will use, go buy doepfer drehbank twice, computer of your choice, nice synth u wanna use and let just everything play. the computer gives u the sound and u just gonna freak it. u even dont have to put a look at any screen. just sweep effects, switch sounds, interact them with each other, screw new ones, connect em, tweak em, killem!!!
but sure there r so many different ways to reach point of your choice. just figure out what is best and sure what is payable for u.
i didnt have much money for buyin my equipment, so every month i had to think about what to buy, and where is the point i have something to get started with.
for me that was sure portable good computer, keys and controls, and maybe nice synth. best would be if everything fits in a bag that i dont have to leave it in, case of flights or stuff like that. sure u dont just wanna play at home.
then its time to program ur machine....=)
the padcontrol is really nice toy that gives you possibility for creative working for low money. just program the pads per midi to the record section of the clips in live and any time u push it, it should start quantised record. push again and it stops, start the loop and go for the next sound or tweak another. theres no limit just the RAM of the computer and ur imagination.
u should also program all keys on ur keyboard with any effects u will use. make them all sound nice and then give them all special key on your keyboard.
thats my way of takin maximum out of my minimal equipment. limit is really just the CPU and your RAM maybe. That would be time to record all stuff and sure is better to use midi as less as possible as soon as u can.....
