control lanes annoyance

in sx3, everytime i go into the control lane (ie, for velocity or whatever edit) the pointer arrow automatically becomes a pencil...
this is ok for velocity - but its not ok when i wish to clear a lane of lets say: program change...
it wasnt always like this and i dont understand what i did to make it always that pencil thing.
how do i regain the arrow back?

i am not sure if you can..
nuendo (which im using) does the same thing.
for clearing parameters use the eraser tool .
It took me some time to get use to it
