Where do I find out about what's going on in SF? It doesn't have to be psytrance... just some kind of freaky funky nightlife. A friend of mine is down there for work for a while and hasn't come up with anything yet.
On a related note, I might be taking a trip down to SF for Thanksgiving (Nov 28/29/30-ish) and could be open to a booking one of those nights. PM me if interested.

I recommend talking to Michael Liu. In addition to being a pretty regular promoter of underground Psytrance and multigenre parties up in the bay and San Jose areas, he also plays at least one party every weekend up there.
He is listed on my myspace page on my top people... you can find a link to that in my sig. Hope it helps!

Thanks! I'll check that out.
OK, so it looks like I will almost certainly be coming down to SF this coming Thursday, staying until Sunday or Monday. Anything interesting going on? Any shops I should check out? Sights to see beyond the obvious?

Too bad I'm arriving tomorrow and not tonight.
As it stands, it looks like I'll be getting off the plane, taking transit downtown, and simply wandering for hours on end. Maybe I'll rent a bike (yes, I know about the hills) and drop in on Ceiba.

Alright, I'm in town--posting from a cafe in the upper Haight in fact. It's been dull so far, but I'm going to head over to Ceiba and see what that is like. Saturday: DNA lounge? That's what one of my hosts was suggesting... not sure what it is, but that's the update.

Thank you, Nikita. I am back in Toronto now but managed to see a bit of the city. I didn't like most of the downtown/touristy areas... but managed to feel quite at home once I hit Haight Street. I dropped in on Peter at Ceiba and had a great chat with him, picked up some local SF music (the "Hypnotic Masquerade" compilation, for instance--something I had never even heard of before) as well as some great new threads.
The party I went to on Saturday, "Bohemian Carnival," was pretty wild. No psytrance at all; this was purely a burner/circus party. Freaks and characters galore! I have to say--those people are very good at what they do; that was some of the best alt circus stuff that I've seen; hoops, trapeze, aerials, a bit of song and dance, plenty of theatre. Lots to watch. The music was good at times; I enjoyed the first act I saw, Helios Jive. Plenty of stage presence and actual talent. The clown rock show was rather odd but endlessly entertaining. The DJs that played in between and after were terrible though. It was actually quite funny; these guys were incredibly good at looking like superstar DJs, had all sorts of expensive gear, but could not hold a mix down to save their lives. From up in the rafters I watched them fuss around with their gear endlessly while the various bands performed. What could they possibly have been doing? Nothing! Just looking cool. Oh DJs...
I made several other cultural observations about this particular event based on my long history of watching SF from afar. I mean, I grew up on Mondo 2000, Wired, and PKD; I've always been very fascinated with whatever strange energy emanates from San Fran. I hope to come back... perhaps within the month, if all works out well.
One final thought: the Arabic restaurant at the west end of Haight was really fantastic... it was the most satisfying meal I've had in a long while. Spiced red wine and kebabs; delicious!
