Basically, I work in two different places but both puters are always on and I would like to have a sort of network between them to exchange music and operate on the other system... anyhow?           cna't find it

yes its very easy , alltought it will be fucked up a bit somethimes ,

but here it is , if u whant to make a network between them no prob , if u whant to make suck thing i wouldn't call it network but more FTP , network is when u have several commputer in the same roomm or building making a big network in this case u whant to transfer things from one pc to another so my advice to u , is to create a FTP Server with one computer or even on your own computers , it will be more dificult , u need to follow some protocols , if it would be to make a network at home i could help but in this case i can't help u , i don't have enough information about this ,

but for what u need , u need to make a ftp server try to find out on internet how to create a fctp server

when u create is easy to transfer things , using a FTP client

If they are both connected to the Internet, setup an FTP server on each computer. You can transfer files using an FTP client.

There are other options but that seems like the easiest.

another easy way is to use the Mac's 'Windows Sharing'. You turn it on on the Mac and then connect to it's ip from the Windows machine.
for operating on the other system you can use somthing like VNC.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Russolo, 1913

cool
i appreciate the feedback.. FTP seems to be the best option but I have no idea how to setup a server...

i'll try using "Windows Sharing", but what is VNC?

At first, i was thinking more of a P2P client like I used to do ages ago using pc through a program called PCanywhere...

Undertow - theoretically i don't think normal FTP is much safer than windows file sharing, they both transfer in plaintext.

you could go through the extensive route of setting up windows filesharing over an encrypted VPN session. But what Darkpsy suggest is probably your best bet for just sharing files - Windows FTP servers like Servu FTP are fairly easy to configure/install. And you would just need to install one.

To operate the other system you should definitely check out VNC. There are a few free VNC servers for Windows - not sure about the MAC though.

Hope that helped.

illusions: I have a hard time believing that there arn't a bucket full of security holes in windows sharing. (Actually, I'm quite sure there are).

The plain text issue isn't as important. Sure they can grab your passwords and use your FTP server but that isn't as bad as taking over your PC. [1] Of course you need a secure FTP server that isn't running in super user mode but I'll put my bets on anyone but Microsoft for security issues.

If you really want security, use SCP (Secure Copy).

[1] The issue isn't so much people grabbing your passwords. Most people that have access to the actual traffic coming from/to your PC have faster servers with more bandwidth at their disposal than any home user. If you turn on windows sharing on your PC, there is a relatively large chance that there are some buffer overrun exploits available in script form somewhere on the net. People just run scans to find computers that are exploitable. Script kiddies abund.

If your that concerned about security, running windows file sharing is not really gonna be much of an additional problem. Running Windows is enough to keep the script kiddies happy.

This is probably a lot more information than "IT" was hoping for.

PS: I did mention setting up filesharing over a VPN with restricted access - would make things slightly more secure ;-)

cheers

illussions, you're probably right about IT getting more than he was asking for.

About running Windows, you can run it behind a firewall and it shouldn't be much of an issue but if you open a port in the firewall to connect to windows sharing, things are getting dangerous!

Mac OS comes with samba (which is the unix most knwn file sharing system, it doesnt matter which file system you have), you should enable it and connect to it from the pc with the network map utility.           (www) DarkPrisma.com.ar/ ~ FranticNoise.com.ar/ ~ Megalopsy.com.ar/ ~

since mac OS 10 is in fact a linux build it should also work with ssh (look for putty in google, that's a free tool to connect to ssh servers). ssh is the best remote control protocol i know of...

Fregle, OS X is based on BSD actually. Not Linux. But close enough.

About Secure Shell (SSH), the file coying part of that is scp (Secure Copy). It still needs a server running on both computers to be able to copy stuff from both locations.

So indeed IT could install it (or activate it on the Mac side) but FTP just seems easier.
