Me and my mate would like to connect our pcs
4 playing live and spliting the whole
process. For instance one pc does the sequencing and some h/w and the other playing the vsts or other h/w synths.
The thing is that neither of us has done this before and we're not planning 2 lose what's left of the summer trying 2 figure it out. :-P
Soooo anyone who's tried it or has any links please help!

p.s. i'll need some examples 2!
-should we use the spdif in order the
2 systems to be synched?
-how does the vst system link work
-which pc playing what/combinations you've
tried and work out better...
things like that...

You'll probably need system link and for that you need the spdif's for communication between the pc's. Check the pdf-manual to Cubase Sx for more infos, it shouldn't be hard to find it floating around on the web somewhere

You can use one computer as a virtual synth machine and/or FX station.
the other as the sequencer.

it works without trouble.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

if you have low latency soundcards you can do it the old fashoned way.,

hook up one pc (the one that plays the vsti's) through midi to the other pc.,
then play the vsti one as if it was an external midi module connected to the sequencer one.

you can use one of those vst effects rack host proggies out there to run the vsti's on and receive midi notes in real time., also some sequencers can do it too (logic for sure)

second option is you could run a sequencer on both computers and sync them .,., one sending sync, the other receiving., no midi notes sent from one to the other.,
then you can have part of the track running from one sequencer and the rest comming from the second sequencer .,.,

the good thing about this is that you dont send too much data over the midi link., only sync info and no note data .,. so the whole thing should sound tighter., (but if you use midi over tcp or something similar then there should be no such problem)

the bad thing is that if one computers drops sync you are in biiig trouble.,

i never heared of the spdif thing to sync stuff.,
it should be possible tho.,

but with good midi interfaces and good software the latency can be compensated for when it comes to syncing.,

you have to decide yourself how to divide the load between the two comps., you know how heavy the different parts are on your system.,

You can use the steinberg vst system link which allows one pc to be slaved to another. I'm not using it myself and don't know how solid it is but it may work for you.

Another method would be to use a SMPTE timecode generator, split the signal (the audio) and feed it into the midi/audio card's smpte in jack (my winman 4x4 has this feature, not sure how common it is though!). Sync the sequencers to smpte rather than midi clock.

Hope this helps

Had any luck?

I myself am thinking about simply make a virtual instument on my extra pc(wich is very old), still, if it can at least hold on to a V-station or bass-station, it will be mighty cool

actually yes ! we've connected the pcs through our midi interfaces and one pc deals mainly with vsts and loops while the other one handles the h/w synths ... works out fine !!! The thing is that we've couldn't sync cubase using the spdif but never mind - no worries !
