Hey guys,
This might be something really simple that I'm missing, and I would appreciate any clarification.
So different sounds, eg a hihat and snare, both with the same peak db level, will be much louder when two snares are played at the same instant than when both a snare and hihat are played.
Is this just because the peak dB levels occur at different samples in each sound, therefore summing the different sounds results in a lower peak dB, OR
Is this also because both sounds occupy different frequency bands and there is some effect like destructive interference caused?
I can understand whats going on here intuitively, but it would be great if anyone had the physics to back it up
Apologies for the bad explanation - it's late!
Thanks for any answers in advance. Cheers

As i understand it is because the high frequencies can envelope relatively freely in the upper spectrum and have enough room to swing.
edit:
Ok, i just woke up .. I see you ask a different question SpaceAlpha - http://soundcloud.com/galaxy-studio |
