Im running Windows XP Media Center. Maybe this isnt the best forum to ask at, but ill give it a try. Im out of ideas. I can home today and saw about 50 popups and multiple icons on my desktop that I didnt put there. Also, the background is no longer my desktop, it was changed to a webpage (with a very graphic image, i can tell its a webpage because i can right-click and view the source). I found the file and deleted it, but the webpage on my desktop changed to a blank white page. I went background hunting and found an image i liked and tried to set it as the background. IT WONT CHANGE. I dug through the settings to try and fix it, but I cant find anything that would change it back to a regular desktop. Im pretty sure i got all the spyware and adware off (i even had to go through and delete some by hand).
alright... heres the question...
how the hell do i change it back??? |

I would advice to look for Internet Security software by Symantec, it helped me with my problems that were pretty similar to yours.
Give it a try.

It also monitors any kind of outbound connection from your PC. You can easily see what file making this form of communication and you could try to delete it from your computer. And yes it's a good preventive tool as well. I had the same kind of problem once and i managed to solve it with another software, called Zone Alarm
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/application?namespace=zls_catalog&origin=global.jsp&event=link1.skuList&&zl_catalog_view_id=201&lid=nav_db
But from what i've seen, the Symantec software is more powerful and handy in many sorts of net attacks.
Try them both and tell me if it helps.
Good Luck

Trust me, that was the first thing I did. For a free application, its awsome. Thanks!

You don't have to buy anything yet, there are shareware versions of both programs i think. Zone Alarm for sure and Internet Security as well i think.
Don't give up yet, don't format we'll solve it.

I had a lot of problems with the Zone Alarm firewall.
Since it is v5.x it didn't support, or have programming errors with p2p routines. My pc and connection hanged off always after 8-12 min using Zone Alarm.
But there is another free good firewall called Outpost firewall. Try this instead of Zone Alarm if you get problems with it.

Look for the free version.
To remove the webpage in the background right click on desktop, go to desktop panel and set
another background.
Another good tool to prevent probs like that is
Spybot - Search and Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/

actually, i tried that. its just like right clicking on a webpage. i dont get the "desktop panel" option. I get the "view source", "properties", and "encoding" options. also, a few others. "properties" just tells me about the webpage, where the file is located, what type of document it is, etc. i started looking through my control panel and different settings and couldnt find anything to change it back to a normal desktop setting. |

hey s0ft,
1st download "Spybot" and "HiJackThis" and scan your computer,
make sure you are not viewing your wallpaper as web page- right click on empty space in your desktop then properties goto web tab and check out the option "view wallpaper as web page"
also check your registry for unknown objects at the following keys,
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentversionRun
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentversionRun
at the end make sure you're deleting all your temporary internet files and all the unnecessary objects under "View Objects" at the internet explorer properties screen
then if you still got some energy run spybot and hijackthis again and restart your computer,
Peace and good luck,
  Space is the place

You can also open desktop properties in the the system options folder, you find it in the start menu-options (i have german version there is called 'Einstellungen') - system.
