Get acronis disc imager,no it will not work ,and u will end up having only document files.
The acronis disc imager can do it for u and will duplicate the drive 100%

There is another reason. Your windows may detect a new HDD and not let you boot. (are you using windows XP?)

You may be forced to reinstall windows. Why not just use both drives? use the 300 as your system drive and your 1000 for backups and work. You will have more speed, because your system will be working off one drive and your applications from another.

If you use an advanced Image tool like Ghost/Acronis it should work fine.

But it is not an easy process...!
Imaging HD should be done carefully and with the right knowledge.

If you decide doing this on your own you can PM me and I'll try to guide you remotely...           https://soundcloud.com/avivtech

If you are using a DAW like Cubase you can select an option to save your opened project into a new folder, which you can put into a directory on your external. You can do that with Ableton too, I believe.

well, if i get it correct it could be done the following way:
suppose you have system on C; music projects, audio files and other documents on D; and you will connect your new terrabyte hdd on E.
You move all the data from D to E. Then you have 2 options: rename D to, say, F; and E - to D.
After that you will have C as system, big 1TB D with your projects and F free for, say, games =)
Or, i think you can unite C with F with Acronis Disk Director Suite; but do that only after you save all your necessary data somewhere.

Should work fine fo sure Damn acronis managed to fuck up my systemdisk big time, tried to restore an incremented backup but acronis decided to freeze and after that i still haven´t been able get the disk working, i think it screwed with the MBR or something.           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

what did you do with acronis? interesting to know, because i used it several times. i resized the system partition, i resized the partition with audio work, and i deleted a partition which i freed up of data. it worked fine for me, thanks God, because i didnt have a chance to make a backup. I used Acronis DDS 10.5.6 I guess (the first version that handles vista).

on the other hand once i tried to moved a partition with partition magic and fucked up all data. r-studio helped me that time.

Ghost does it and its a peice of piss to do.

Install Ghost
Create Backup of disc
Store backup on external drive
Reeboot pc with Ghost recovery disc in drive
Select backup file
ok ghost to install

My experience is that Acronis is vastly superior to Ghost. I never recommend incremental or differential backups, because it only takes one corrupted backup to possibly put you in trouble. Any good backup plan includes multiple layers of redundancy...having multiple full backups is the way to go!

I bought Ghost with my music laptop, and the only time I had to actually use it, it fucked up. Switched to Acronis after getting advice from Pavel and... well... there is no 'and', I haven't had to use it yet!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

One vote to acronis from me too. Wasn't using it till recently actually.
We had this case at work and needed to clone an old hd to a new one. the disk had a lot of encrypted files but it never occured to us that it could be a problem in the cloning process. Well, Norton Ghost managed to fuck our nerves up really bad. Slow as hell and failed 4 times to do the job, reaching about 75% and then presenting an error: not being able to read from destination drive. We lost a day trying and as a last resort we decided to try Acronis. It cloned the disk flawlessly in 1 hour and a half / no errors. It's pretty straightforward too, you can't go wrong using it.
Uninstalled ghost and we're never going back.

Thats the funny part, i just launched it and wanted to restore a incremental backup of my systempartition. it shut down win and stated its own OS to where it will restore the backup. Next thing i know nothing more happens for like 15 hours, only one option left..... reboot. Then i decide to install a fresh xp-partition so far no probs, but when i transfer from the POST-screen to start booting xp i just got the message telling me that no OS was installed so i guess the MBR-table was damaged or something else causing it to not read from the boot.ini file           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915
