Hi, this is probably not the right place to be asking for help about my computer, but since you guys have been so helpful in the past and actually put this beast together(well suggested the great parts)..lol,, I figured you might be able to help my "ISRATRANCE COMPUTER" which is fantastic. Well ever since I put it together I heave not been able to shut it down. Its been over 8 months. Every time I try to shut it down it reboots. I only use this computer for studio and I dont mind it being on 24/7, but sometimes I do take vocations and I have to resort to just pulling the cord,, which i hate doing..Its running on XP.I ve tried a few things that are suggested from the internet, but no luck. I am not good with computers so going into bios for me is not an option. I have all my stuff on it so i would rather just have it this way rather then not working. Is there anyone so kind that can help? hope spindrift and orange see this post! hehe

1. after you exit all possibly running programs (that's for not losing any off your work basically),
press and keep the power button pressed for 5-8 seconds..

there u go computer off

if u don't like this solution try something more convincing:

2. get a working antivirus. i HIGHLY recomment avast, which is free for home use, weekly updated and saved my ass a lot of times. turn it off. use it just for manual scans. scan. if your memory if infected you will be prompted for a bootscan. do it and delete all possible threats.

usually wavs, presets and projects don't get infected, so, in the worst scenario you'll just have to re-install/repair programs.. no bad.

3. get system-mechanic. buy it if possible, but i think previous versions are now free. it's very easy to comprehend what to do with it once you run it, so i won't explain for this one (it's mostly registry clean and stuff like that) **do not use 'eliminate duplicate files'** everything else is cool to do.

yay. tnx piako_bianko it worked.. way better then just pulling the plug..
the thing about registry cleaning and virus is that this computer has never been connected to the internet and i plan to keep it that way, so i dont think its infected with virus.
anyway thanx for your help

viruses may be contained to files u got from somewhere; u don't have to be connected in the internet in order to get your computer infected..

even the autorun from a friend's flash disk could infect your computer...

anyway, i'm happy i helped.. at least till this point           extreme

Hmm, still possible to have a virus tho.
You got software on that computer somehow, didnt you?

But anyway, USUALLY this is a problem with bad drivers.
When shutting down windows tries to stop all processes first.
If there is something wrong with a driver then it might crash windows and the computer will reboot (before it can actually shut down properly).

You would need someone technical to find it and fix it.

you guys might be right about scanning it for viruses just to make sure, but i think its unlikely i have one, couse all the programs i installed came from a special hard drive i use to move stuff back and forth, and this special hard drive gets checked for viruses each time i have to move something. I will still scan it with Avast just to make sure. I only have one driver installed for my Access Virus, which I don't think is the source of the problem since I had it working fine on my other computer. I've read many places that drivers are a major cause of this problem and also some settings in the bios. I am not technical so going into bios clueless is a bad idea. TThank you for your help everyone

The problem could be software or hardware at this point.

Try disconnecting all peripherals, shuttong down all programs, and turning off any non-standard windows services before you do a shutdown. This might give you an idea if the problem is something you installed. Consider going into system properties->advanced->startup & recover and make sure automatic restart is unchecked. Essentially machine could be crashing during shutdown, & is just restarting.

Another route you could take is boot into safe mode & try the shutdown. This might eliminate some drivers as the culprit.

well.. since this is an issue for the past 8 months consider backing up all ur stuff cos pulling the plug and pressing the power button for 4 sec each time u wanna shutdown ur pc will eventually lead up to a hardware crash.

dharma labs suggestion about automatically restart is correct this is a common isue when something is crashing the system during the shutdown forcing it to restart.

a trip to ur bios is essential cos it might be some setting like wake up on lan or usb or keyboard/mouse making the pc to boot up agin cos os some movememnt on these.

my opinion is to format and reinstall everything, updating ur bios and all importand drivers.

check ur ram and hd for errors (cos of all that unpluging during those 8 months)

also try to get a keyboard that has a shutdown button and see if this works.

when pressing the sleep button does it work? its better than staying on or hard turn off.

and please state what motherboard ur using!          http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

It might also be an ATX power issue with your motherboard (I've met a similar problem on my mobo). So after having done all the software checkings mentioned above, go to your mobo manufacturer website and check there knowledge database.
