Depends what for, there are many kinds of compressors.
Multiband
Limiter
Expander
Sidechainer
each of them for different role, but if you reffer to company whom develop software i think most of compressors pretty the same, although i have no knowledge or ability to test by myself.

Kjaerhus Golden Compressor (my choice... low cpu and excellent sounding), Waves C1 (for sidechain) and C4 (the best multiband for me) |

industed, i think its a better idea to write the word compressor or compression in the search field and restrict your search to "subject only". this topic has been discussed in depth in many threads. try there first.

"Compressor which sound excellent". Are we talking about the same tool, you know,the one which deals with dynamics of audio?

yes... each compressor has it's way of creating the envelope... like GCO has various modes: pumper classic and all that |

i use GCO for kick when i need but i tend to not use compression in the kick. some people say it's good to have multiband compression on the kick (i've used it before with good output but it's too hard to tweak it with this 30€ speakers) so i would recomend Waves C4
EDIT: i've also used Waves L2 on the kick it will give you a STRONG kick but i think it's too strong (plus you barely control L2). it all depends on the bassline. |

greatest comp i ever heard was a focusrite ISA compressor... Never heard any software compressor come close to that... u can use them subtle, then u don't hear it (which is good, cuz the 'sound' of a compressor is in fact an unwanted side-effect), if u go overboard the class-A circuit just makes it fat and smooth at the same time...
greatest soft-comp for me is without a doubt the PSP vintagewarmer, weather it's single or multiband, mono or stereo... But i like the blockfish a lot too... very powerfull freeware. the ones from waves sound extremely clear (all plugins from waves sound surprisingly clear), but that's not my thing... I like distortion and saturation... |

Am slightly confused about vst compressor quality.. analog modelling aside I would have thought that a compressor would just do something like this for each sample:
if (amplitude > threshold)
{
amplitude = threshold + ((amplitude - threshold) * ratio);
}
Is the quality really that different between the different software compressors? |

that's the algorithm in it's simplest form... But like most algorithms in there simplest forms this will produce bad side-effects, that algorithm doesn't take care of some exceptions (example, ur wave goes over the threshold at a certain point, and with that algorithm ur gonna compress every sample that goes over the threshold, but not the samples that stay under the threshold, so u'll change the timbre of ur wave (because the wave will have changed shape) with that algorithm, which is not what u want to happen). And every software company has their own algorithm that tries to catch all those exceptions in the best way possible. And algorithms are the central part of such programs, so they won't be sharing it twith other firms, because of that each soft has a different solution to each exception and will sound different. |
