1.balancing dynamics
2.adding loudness
3.making it punchy
4.placing it further in background
5.giving it fatness
6.limiting
Usually i come up with 4-5 compressors to meet these tasks it just depends on material mixing at the time... chosen ones;) URS, Bluetubes, Sonnox, vintage warmer, SSL4000.. knee, ultra low release/attack times and infinite ratio are nice features in some of cases. It just depends of musical material what stands for high quality =)
I think sonnox eq is one of the best even i get bored of it sometimes.
Harmonics distortion. Is it good in digital systems? If your sample rate is 48kHz and you distort at 8kHz - harmonic distorion will be added it's higher harmonics at 16kHz and 32kHz... 32kHz happens to be over your sample rate 48kHz (because theory tells 48kHz works in praxis at 24khz as it's half rate), so 32kHz would be bounced to it's alias fq 12.1kHz which is not harmony related to 8kHz. Sonnox specs: "Extremely low noise and distortion (below -130dBr)"
Analog devices and eqs are different thing. because analog has "true 50kHz sample rate" and harmonics upper hearing range will be heard as harmonic effect in 20hz-20kHz.
just tell me if amma talking total bullshit anyway just find High end eq and comp by testing and feeling.
