Izotope Ozone is a very good one, the waves is very good too and in the platinum edition there's a few different compressors, check them out- C1, C4 Rcomp, LinMB

PsyGhotDeli,

Here are the steps I go through when using a compressor. I mostly use the Waves C1.

Set your attack all the way to 0.
Set the release to max.
Set the ratio to around 8:1.

Grab the threshold knob/slider and give it a twist, bringing it down to -20db, or even more if it's a quiet sound. You should hear the sound 'squash'. If it gets too quiet you'll have to up the volume (some compressors don't automatically boost the output) of the whole channel.

What you are hearing is the sound get compressed based on a certain volume peak in the sound. The threshold specifies at what volume the compressor kicks in.

After setting the threshold to something that sounds good, grab the release knob and start backing it off until you get a nice pumping sound. Basically you want the compressor to release at a point that it helps give the sound an 'oomph.'

After tweaking the release, give the attack knob a twist and find a point that sounds good. As you increase the attack, you should hear the compressor take longer and longer to engage.

Lastly, back off (or increase if you want to really crush the sound) the ratio until it the sound has a pleasing compressed sound.

Hope that helps!

waves Reneissance compressor is superb. I don't like the C-1. It's very thin sounding compared to their Reneissance comp. The PSP compressors are also bloody nice.

AvS - PSP is Ultrafunk, right?
I find myself using the Ultrafunk more and more, I like it more than the Waves C1... It compresses better I think.

> Ultrafunk is PSP?

nope - Ultrafunk was made by Sonitus. I think it is now bundled with Sonar? Bundled with something anyway.

PSP is ... PSP... they make those things like the Vintage Warmer compressor and the Mix Pack (containing the MixComp compressor) and they kick ass in a serious way.

I totally recommend the BlockFish by the way.... it's free (not that this bothers most ppl) and it very very good. I was put off by the price tag (how can it be good if it is free) but felt very embarrassed when I discovered how good it is. Especially for percussion. It's made by Digital Fish Phones (or something).

Waves RCL or C4, or for really compressed madness, try the Camel Audio Camel Phat 2 (chemical bros. distortion plus built in flanger, band pass filter, small but powerfull filter env).
