is the best way to do?????
and who values he have to do in threshold, attack......
i now how its works but i want to now is there is a logic to do that.....for example i now that the threshold is a line who every sounds who pass them the comprresor start working..... and the ratio is the value of db to "cut" 4:1 is a good point.....but how much i have to put in threshold.....in the midlle of the max and the low picks....is it to much????? sorry the english..... i can't explain better than that....
Thanks

I don't mean to discourage you, but the first thing you should worry about is how good or right sounding are your tracks in regards to their structure, selection of sounds and overall mixdown.

You could upload some samples in order to get some feedback from the more experienced members here, on what you need to work more on your tracks, if there's anything.

Don't compress just to compress.
Compress only if you know exactly what and why you need to compress.

Which means that you probably have to search and read a lot.

That's what i did and it worked, but it needs time.

Compression is an art and besides the fact that there are some certain general rules when compressing individual sounds, it doesn't mean at all that they can be applied always in the same way in every track.

A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

you need to get a great mix without using compression at all first.if your there it mean your ears are well trained, so it s sure you ll ear if a compressors make things sound better or worse .(and maybe you ll not use compressors a lot in the end ,there is different use, but often it s for fixing problems the easy way)

Alex and PoM are right. You have to have a reason for compression. There are a few things that compressors are good at:

- evening out level changes
- increasing perceived loudness
- increasing sustain
- adding movement/groove to tracks
- glueing together separate tracks (for example drum tracks)
- removing transient peaks
- enhancing transient peaks
- changing the sound of transients
- coloring sounds
- some things i forgot to mention

Try to figure out how to do these things with a compressor and you have a valuable tool at your disposal.

*after* you have a good sounding hihat pattern, comprised of two or more samples (ie closed, half-closed, open, etc) and you've EQ'd and got it sounding good, then add a compressor over them to make it sound even better.

That was a technique I attempted early on when I didn't know how to pick good samples and tried to compress it into sounding good. The result was crap and I gave up on compressing my percussion. But recently I picked it back up and have been thrilled with the response - makes hihat patterns more lush and even, like a crazy drummer instead of a bunch of samples.

I also create a group for my snares and do a little compression (less is more, I try to keep it around 2:1 ratio). And any other elements that play off each other.
