Important pointers, IMO... just my opinion
1) Compressing the Mix != Mix Compression
2) On percussive parts - I use compressors to increase the difference in dynamics between the transient and body of the sound - I don't use compressors as tools to reduce dynamic range at all.
3) Pre existing samples are often comressed. They are often not compressed with the right characteristics and need further (gentle) compression to get them to fit with the mix.
4) There is no rule that says you have to do all the work with one compressor - in fact several compressors chained together with less extreme settings typically results in a cleaner sound and allows you to compress further without it becoming 'too much' which gives you a greater palette of dynamic control to play with.
5) Compressor plugins are not designed to flatten transients - that is a limiters job - it requires the ability to look ahead, as otherwise the compressor cannot react fast enough - most compressors do no offer this facility - instead, its all about letting the attack through - don't run your compressors on maximum fast!!! 5-30ms on the attack please, unless there are extreme circumstances!
7) That ratio is multiplacative, not additive! Think carefully about where you want the threshold and how much you want to compress - tip. Look at the RMS of your signal before compression - set the threshold to louder than this, and most of the time, your signal won't be compressed - set it below this and most of the time it will ... depending on where you set the release.
Loads more - just my opinion, and what works for me.

I always put a compressor if I use a sample wich I cut out from a movie - there often with a more radical setting.And often on percussive parts ,sometimes on kicks and mostly on bass.And than a slighlty compression on groups - but not always.
Have expirienced almost any setting as a useful in particular cases of my attempts but point 5 I often overdone ,played wit attack like a bomb sometimes-sometimes it just sounded better to me-but strangely at the other direction .
Kool points,point 7 with rms also very interesting.
I tend to use always the sonnox but sometimes I try sth else.
Must train more. |

Just think a nature of sound thru ambition and use your ears to complete your visions - It's all about it =)
-The most of psychedelic artists use compressor ONLY for punch (snappy kick, hihat, snare etc)
->they protect transients and controls decay time with a attack time. SSL4000 buss compressor is awesome for this compression
-Vocals and other recorded shit are different thing
-Think people usually get fixated on level compression which it's not actually needed in common psytrance. Bass examp: if you've got 4 bars tonal bass line which goes from F to G nto A, don't use compression to fix "loud G" tone, use an EQ for a tone =)
-Level Compression Examp: Long bass note which is fluctuating or sampled bongos which has different volume levels in a same tone
-Buss compressions is only for pros =) All regular psyproducer can be using it, but i cannot hear it's effect in 90% of records =)Some producers can do it in LAX,NY style and then it's fucking loud.
-If your all sounds got "it" by themself -> kick got it's punch, bass sound is brilliant and all got em loudness -> EQ em to fit together and leave the maximizing the last for master out. Buss Compressions is not needed -> if kick&bass sounds good together you can push them to them limits without compressing
-All High Pass below 100hz sounds terrible and make artifacts.

Best advice about compression i learn from the book 'mixing with your mind'. Basically what it says, in heavily simplified form is
- Start with release at the minimum, ratio max and attack anywhere.
- Drive audio into the unit and play around with the attack to find the best position for it.
-Once you've done that start playing with release until you find a setting where the signal 'bounces' back almost in time to the music
-Then move on to ratio - lower it as much as possible whilst still retaining the effect the attack and release settings have on the sound
- Then lower the threshold until the signal is only being compressed some of the time/at key moments, not just flattened.
The book goes into a lot more detail, and I would suggest anyone interested in getting better at mixing check it out, it's an amazing source of info. But yeah, i find approaching compression in this order makes it a lot easier to get the right settings for the right sound |
