I don't know exactly what this technique is called so I'll try to explain it the best I can. I'm no expert when it comes down to making tracks so please bare with me.
I want to be able to have my kick and open hi's start out "hollow" sounding while at the same time gradually building up to be more "solid" at the climax. A lot of psytrance song use this effect. I'm almost positive this has to do with compression. But I'm just not sure how to do it.
Right now I have my kick panned hard left and Open hi's panned hard right. I've routed them to a stereo group w/ dual stereo panners where I have Waves C1 on the insert. Now is where Im lost. I thought getting the effect I was looking for would of been done with automation but its not workin out...
So I'm obviously doing something wrong here. If anybody could help me out or at least tell me what the technique is called I'd appreciate it. |

Hey,
You can do this with a filter in Cubase SX there's one called Tonic that does the job.
Just make a group channel. Insert the Tonic Filter on the channel. (this comes with cubase)
Route your Kick and Hi Hat to that group.
Now automate the filter cutoff of the Tonic.

yes!! Thats exactly what I was trying to do!
I would of never thought of using a filter. For some reason I always assumed it was done with compression. Thanks a bunch! |

It can be done with Multiband compression, but since changing the settings on a multiband compressor essentially cuts and boosts different frequency bands, you're using it like a filter or EQ.
To do the thing you described, you would set up the multiband compressor with one of the settings that boosts the higher bands while cutting the bass.
To make it fade in from hollow to normal (or vice-versa), you'd set up a high-boost/low cut type setting on the multiband compressor on an audio clip in the offline process mode, then open the "More" dialog box, and check on e of the "pre" or "post" boxes and adjust the millisecond value to tell it when to start fading the effect in or out.
Remember to UN-CHECK those boxes next time you use that same effect in offline process mode... Cubase remembers the setting and will use it next time you use that effect...
Of course you can use this fade in/out method with any VST effect, such as the Tonic filter or anything else you've got. There are endless potential combiniations & possibilities, which is why there are so many FX breaks like that these days.
