hello there ,
i recorded a singer, and of course when she screams it peaks too high , what settings should i put for the compressor to make it "softer" and balanced with the rest of her singing.
i mean like long/short release/Attack,treshold and ratio settings etc.
thank you

It's impossible to give parameter values for this here as it totally depends on which compressor you're using and the actual level, timing and dynamic range of the vocal. Likewise, running through a procedure to help you set the settings yourself is really difficult for the same reasons (although perhaps someone here can do that!).

My suggestion is check out Waves RVox.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Can you not get her to record it again and stand back a bit when she screams also with a compressor in the recording chain just in case?

attack - low as possible
release - at your own taste 50ms will be a good point to start at...

thresh - it depends on how you want your dynamic, but don't go lower then -12

ratio - more then 1/2 try 1/4
but not too much

and use the rms mode not the peak one....

enjoy! and give us a sample so we can hear it...

Mic technique is alfa omega! Fix it during tracking, not in the mix           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

you could go with volume automation to compress less or try to compress a lot and see wich one you like the most, try around 6 to 15 db of gain reduction when she sing the loudest and set ratio, attack ,release ,to taste but not too fast or too slow so it don t sound too squashed
