Then stuff starts falling into place.
Just do whatever you feel like doing at the time. Working with your inspiration, instead of forcing your self to do something, is the best way to go.

+1
just chill on your setup, feel the energy, touch your inspiration and enjoy your ride.

i normaly start with the kick and bass then add percusion, but my last project i started with the melody and lead and some stabs and build a grid then added the bassline later, i found it much better. |

hi to all
If you r recording your synths/sampler's tweaks before making the track or during rough layed out arrangement ,a good method is to set beforehand the length of the loop/s you are recording (pads, atmospheres, perc parts ect..) and when u Edit em(cut, duplicate, sequence and so on..) its easier to audition and try them out to find which sounds are good with each other, before you know it you 'll find a good phrase or mood of the theme/track
It is mostly common everywhere in electronic dance music to build those loops/phrases in 2,4,8,16 or 32th's bars.
but does anyone know about building loops in 13,26,65..? |

well if it is odd it does not mean uninteresting..
after analyzing some psy trance tracks i found out that it is not necessarily should be in 8,16,32 |

I think understanding what the word composition means in the first place can be helpful.
Generally in photography, composition isn't a dirty word. It just implies that you used contrast and spacing correctly to achieve the feel/mood of the subject.
In Psy, where the principles are basically the same as in photography, but just aureal instead of visual, anything which implies understanding according to musical theory is a dirty word, too constricting, doesn't let out the genius from the ISRA sandbox hatchling philosophy, gets you set in the ways of the establishment, so don't look at the above. Unless you actually want to understand what composition is in essence. |

I am quite fond of running non 4/8/16 based loops in ableton. For instance, to make an evolving/unsteady pattern, use a loop thats 3 beats long instead of 4.
Or, even if the patter is 4 beats long try unlinked an envelope for cutoff or resonance or keytracking or what have you and make that envelope an odd time like 3 beats or 7 beats or something, this way the pattern iterates on itself and changes and isn't always the same.
I also agree with bukboy. If you really want to know the ins and outs you need to study more than how to tweak a cutoff and resonance knob. If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Thinking "outside the box" ... requires a box .
LOL
But not about the standards hey wills? Basic stuff like, is it well composed? has contrast? has dynamics? Originality? creativity? Can't have that...
