Hi all,
I have one doubt about composition in relation to the tone used.
Many DJs use Mixed in Key program, which shows the root key and is major or minor(natural, harmonic or melodic).
If I make an electronic composition using other modes that you are not the Jonio (Major) or aeolian (minor),how this software would represent?
And exotic scales?
Everyone uses only the major or minor?
Thanks so much |

The Mix in Key thing gets the root note. I asume it makes a kind of calculation of the average frequencies used on a track.
No rules bro, use whatever scale / mode u like... Major is a no no in pystrance (to my taste)... minors are ok also phrygian and oriental scales.
Blues scale is nice too.
Cheers. |

i completely agree with aciduss.
minor is what is used most of the time, sometimes harmonic minor or phrygian, exotic scales more seldomly. and please never ever use the ionian scale, it usually sounds horribly cheesy, especially in trance. i passionately hate the major scale |

Yes i know have no rules, but no gets only root note, it get the mode too. Its a cycle of the 4th and the 5th;
but analyzing several cds in psytrance by mixed in keys, you can see it has many songs in a major key.
Someone done this? |

yeah i mean, a song can be in all kinds of keys but especially in psytrance that doesnt really mean that it will be overly major or minor or whatever, because lots of the main sounds in psytrance are verging on atonal (don't have a tone/dont belong to a scale).
not liking major scales in trance is completely understandable, because when a major scale is used in an overtly major way it sounds awful and cheesy. however, if selections of notes from the major scale are used in conjunction with the omission of others, it can create an effect that is clearly not minor, but not super major cheesy as well and can actually be really cool. not to mention there is tons of great music (non-trance) in major keys. tons. almost the entire raggae genre and jam band genre for example.
if you want to find out how this program responds to non-traditional chord/freq structures i suggest you make a 30 second clip in some strange mode and then subject it to analysis
