Could you speed that up a bit and add a little pulse width modulation?

That's fucking sick!

Listening to music, preferably to as many genres as possible, is a great way to develop a 'musical ear'.
Try listening to pop, metal, jazz...

gives me an idea for a post!

question mate, in this sample, how do you make that synth sound like it has vibrato on it at times, is it the vst, or pitch wheel modulation? just sounds very simular to ananda shake, always wanted to know how they do that.

you can achieve this in some ways, depends a bit on the synth you use, but the easiest and most common would be to set LFO->pitch on those specific notes.

try different speeds and just a bit of amount/depth.

IMO,
I usually start my songs with chord progressions.

When I get a chord progression to sound good I try to stick a kick and a bassline onto its chord notes.

If It sounds good I move on, if not I mute the bass and try a diferent progression.

(having your chord progressions sounding good is halfway to the finish of a track. You can then stick loads of stuff on them and they will most likely end up sounding good.)

Next step is usually creating a pad, one that goes on top of the notes of the chords and that doesn't vary too much in pitch.

(You don't necessarily need to use the pad as a pad, you can allways use an effect on it to make it in to something else.)

The last stage is creating the melody.
Focus on the pad notes and count the 3rd, 4th,(better sounding ones)
2nd,6th,(good one for passing from one pad note to the other)
5th and 7th (doesn't sound bad but its a bit of an indeferent sound).
This are notes from the scale you're using.

Example:

In an harmonic minor scale in "A":
A B C D E F G#
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

If the Pad note is A (winch would be a good note to start considering A is the root note in this scale)
the 3rd would be C and the 4th would be D.

If it was C then you would count it like this:

A B C D E F G#
6 7 1 2 3 4 5

So the 3rd would be E and the 4th F.

Before you start picking notes its a good idea to make a rythm with just one note and then move your notes about using the previous method.

<< This is just my thecnique, it doesn't mean that it is the right one... >>

(This may be a boring text to some of the people on this forum but I know that there are a lot of newcomers that may appreciate it.
I would for shore a few years back.)

Ill also leave you with this:

It is easier to show how was that done: http://i.piccy.info/i4/2f/35/804ff608d043f5c476d3b7b8fc6d.jpeg

I used Vanguard vst, with Instant Glide enabled. Any synth that has glide will do the job though.

you're probably asking too much. or maybe not. the best way to learn how a melody works is to first go smoke a reefer and try to just observe things. then you come back to your setup and the shit works through you. works for me.
