I love making some freestyle melodies in chillout .

The best way to make melodies (imo) is to arm whatever synth you want to use (with whatever sound you want), play the percussion/bass part of your track in a loop and just jam out on your keyboard. You can also try drawing in midi note patterns.

Melodies always sound better if they are interacting with the other sounds in your track. There are some different techniques you can use (call and response, etc), but all that should matter is that it sounds good in the context of the track.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

imo the easiest is when you choose a scale you like (any major or minor scale) and play around just with the notes that appear in that scale. this way you can't do worse than trying out random notes. ;-)

the better way is to use appropriate chord progressions. you can play your strings/pads in these chords and play your melody from notes within these chords..
this will actually sound very nice and coherent, but not innovative.

not too many psy artists apply a more advanced technique than this. :-P

so google "minor scale" "major scale" and "chord progression" and you will find all you need for a start.

Pick up a good preset or a beautiful sound, that inspires you!
And start playing randomly.
Write down or memorize what sounds good.
Soon you'll get something! ^^

Personally I don't pay much atention to scales.
I go by the sounds. Some are happier, some are more mellow!
Each sounds is asking to be played in a certain way

Learn a scale and go up n down the scale at will, repeating and alternating some notes

Or pick 2 chords only and do the same.

Simple but effective.

Well, with your drums and everything else already nicely programmed, get a basic lead sound on your synth, sampler or whatever and make a single note morse code style rhythm that complements the rest of the track.

Once you have something that fits nicely and interacts well with other elements, start moving the notes to different pitches in an appropriate key for the track.

That's what I do when I can't hear what I want in my head.
