Complimentary Monitors

I have some really nice monitors (K&H 0300) that I'm very happy with, but I find I'm mixing a bit 'soft' on them. My older music on cheaper monitors had a bit more edge (though wasn't as balanced), I've tried to force myself to mix differently, but it isn't really working out.

I've decided to buy some really cheap monitors to A/B my mixes.

Do you recon I should get some really coloured, totally hi-fi style speakers, or is there a way of determining a good 'opposite' set of monitors that would compliment the ones I have now?

I really want to go cheap! Any recommendations/thoughts?

never listened to the kh but i heard they sound on the hifi side ,i would try something like ns10 or maybe adam a7 (ns10 can be cheap if you already have a amp )

what monitors you were using before?

I don't find the k&h hi-fi at all. Very pleasant to use, not fatiguing, but they reveal everything so clearly.
I think that's the problem, I progress with writing slowly because they force me to fix as I go. Some crappy ones would let me just run free knowing I could do all the technical bits later.

I don't think you can buy NS10's anymore. They're famous classics and I think probably expensive due to their vintage appeal.

I had Adam P33a's before this and quite liked them, except they were a little low-mid light and slightly brighter.

KRKs are a good idea.

I'd like to go for something that has *really* hi-fi kick/bass area, so I can get the drums booming!
The more expensive the monitors, the harder I find it is to mix harder dance music? It's just me. I bet nobody else has this problem.

BTW, I have 18 various sized sound traps in my room, so I'm pretty sure I've got a fairly accurate monitoring setup.

strange cause the kh are praised for their lowend maybe you have some room issus? and i agree with detailed monitors it s easy to get lost
the genelec 8040 sound hifi , maybe one would be enought? i m thinking myslef more and more to just buy one speaker insteed of a pair to complement my monitoring , like they do with the auratones in studios

The low end sounds really great!

But, I think that's the issue. I get too lost trying to carve out perfection and subtlety and I don't think perfectly mixed bass really works well on other speakers. Dance music needs to be a bit over the top with extra punch rather than a compliment to the rest of the track. It should dominate the mix more.

Avantone Mixcubes. Might not be what you're looking for but they're exactly what you describe.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Hmmm i never had any issues mixing music on my K+H 300s. Though i do admit that the high end is a little on the soft side for my tastes. How long have you been mixing on them?

If you feel your mixes are lacking bite then maybe you should try playing around with the eq on the back of the 0300s. I've always had mine on flat but maybe that might help for your room.

For A/B purposes just get some cheap hi-fi speakers to see how your mixes are translating to the real world.          http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

These are my 3rd set of monitors, I can't afford to have the previous ones I owned, I've traded upwards.

I've got some terrible Altec Lansing PC speakers plugged in as well now.. lol. I'm not sure how useful they are.

Had the K&H about 8 months now. I do love them. I actually think I need to turn down the highs, so I make them louder. I have a lot of absorption in my room so maye I'm losing some highs.

Yeah if you have a lot of absorption without FRK facing to reflect some highs, then you might have a room that is too dead sounding.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic
