The previous thread reminded me of something I wanted to ask a long time ago.
What do you have to do as a compiler of a cd?
Choose the tracks.... And?           REHAB is for quitters

You don't have to do nothing.
You ought to do the following, I believe:

1. Have something to say and ability to say through music.
2. Collect good music you can say it with (the hardest part really).

And it ain't easy at all as someone who done it once and is doing it now again. Just look at all the boring compilations coming out in the last two years.           ---------------------------------------------

I dont think you have to be such a big artist or dj to compile a CD.
I think all you need are the right connections. Like your friends are artists or a label is your good friend.
I think much of this trance world is due to connections. Friends you make. Thats the most important. TRUST and FRIENDSHIP, and HARD WORK that will get you to compile a CD.
Also maybe if you are a DJ you have to be a good DJ or nobody is gonna trust your work.
So maybe usually good dj`s have the right connections, they are good, and have something unique in them that they want to say through music(like shahar said).

I think ppl dont really care who compiling the compilation.

They see which artists are in the cd and then decide if they want iT or noT.....           ..."Be yourself, let your conscience guide you...

..... But Sputer... someone has chosen these artists and the tracks order so even in a roundabout way, the listener is dependant on the compilers' tastes, I think.           .

You dont have to be a big artist or big dj to compile a cd.

If you think that you know what people will like and you have the right connections to gather tracks that people will love then you can compile a cd.Its not easy but its not very very difficult. It demands money, time, connections and love for the music

I am no dj at all but at the moment i am working on two compilations of mine with both new and already established names featuring in both of them.I dont even know how to spin hehe.

Keep trying people and never give up,thats my advice.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Is it only this that should decide what goes on a compilation? What about knowing what deserves to be released as far as quality, musical ideas and innovation goes? I guess its about finding music that has that experimental/innovative quality that is still dancefloor friendly and will not alienate your typical punter (unless you wanna go broke for the sake of pushing boundaries, but then maybe you are in the wrong scene...). Im not dissing the psy scene, because much of the point is to dance, have fun and not get caught up in self indulgent art wank stylee...but the question is can we do this without sacrificing innovation/musical experimentation...

Only if we have people with vision and ability compile CDs, Tim. Something we lack lately, I feel.           ---------------------------------------------

Maybe also the problem is that everyone thinks he can DJ, everyone thinks he can make music, everyone thinks he can compile a CD, everyone thinks he can open a label. All that without giving it all a real thought, without expecting to work hard and learn first, without testing your musical vision first, without really being ready to eat the shit first.

That's why everything is so degraded, it's only logical, if everything is so easy and everyone can do it, and if everyone does it, it can only be average at best.

im with tim and shahar fully here. since everybody active part of "scene", even after yer or two of listening to this music, maximum that can be done is a average things, also at basic of it trance is a music that speak to basic need of human, mean jump with beat and its enough to be trancer..
in fact to compile cd u have to be deep into the feeling of todays music and be able express its innovating in right choosed serie of trax, with surprizes as well, with alot of monolite mood in it and complete continues storie.           Believe your soul !

Shahar U made me smile Are U maybe an HipHop Listener ? Do You know DeltrOn 3030 ?
(Dan the Automator, Del The Funky Homosapiens & Kid Koala)

One song deals with
" in the year 3030 everybody wants to be an mc....
in the year 3030 everybody wants to be a deejay...
in the year 3030 everybody wants to be a producer..."

(i'm writing this also to show that different people from different scenes have the same worries)           .

Tim i aggree with you in many parts BUT my opinion is that when someone wants to compile a cd he should put tracks that match his tasting style (full on,dub, ambient, progressive or whatever) and he should also try to find tracks innovative on this style.
For example i am mostly interested in full on psychedelic so i am trying to find tracks from artists that i actually like and tracks that are not just the same recipe. Its all a matter of taste and style i guess. The more important thing for me is to know that 'your' music will be widely accepted and enjoyed           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!
