Compilation - Psytisfaction 2 -=- Phonokol Records (March 2005)

Right from my mail to your screen, here we got with another review.
This time the new release from Phonokol Records, an important label that already released dozens of psytrance albums and compilations.
Compiled by Mr. O.K., this second chapter of the "Psytisfaction" series features only Phonokol's artists, some well-known like Dynamic, Gataka and Melicia, and some new to the Phonokol's staff like DNA, Solar Plexus and Intergalactic.

The cover is really aggressive, I like it! It shows two "cyborg women" kissing... Noam Levkovitz is the man responsible for this design... I bet most people like it, if not for the idea, because of the perfect artwork.
Take a look at the cover: http://212.227.206.198/cgi-bin/zoom.cgi?pho1cd332_b.jpg:CDs/pho/pho1cd332.html:;

Track List (the CD has no mention to tracks BPMs):

1. Melicia - Lightning - 07:23
2. Hypersonic - Get Stronger - 07:22
3. Intergalactic - Grab It - 07:02
4. Gataka vs Zyz and Sequipa - Weekend From Hell - 06:13
5. DNA - Fairy Tails - 07:46
6. E-Jekt feat Karld - This Is A Dream - 07:29
7. Aniki - Encourage - 07:47
8. Tetrium - Limbo - 07:31
9. Solar Plexus - Imaginary Muse - 07:39
10. Dynamic - Expander - 6:34

Please if you understand or can correct any sample, PM me!

Lets what's inside:

1. Melicia - Lightning --> Typical Melicia track, good drive and samples... I can't understand what's said at the start, but at the middle the sample is (something like this):

"So much so that I ....... And supervised the investigation in first place..."

Nice track, got power above average, nice way to start a compilation.

2. Hypersonic - Get Stronger --> Hypersonic is not my cup of tea, I prefer Yoni's work as Psydrop. This track sounds slower than the first one (but in fact it's 146 BPMs).

3. Intergalactic - Grab It --> I liked very much Intergalactic last album, Vic Sheffi has lots of projects and all of them are good IMO. This track adds psychedely to this release, much different from the previous tracks, this is a multi-layered journey to the psychedelic realms. Very good track. Samples at the end:

"Your life, your face, your eyes...
Every stone is going alone..."

Congratulations!

4. Gataka vs Zyz and Sequipa - Weekend From Hell --> Sesto Matan together with professional Brazilian psychedelic artists deliver this bomb! Steady track with pumping bass, nice lead synth and great atmosphere.
The samples are very funny (I sure this is wrong, please help me to understand it):

"I got a pill to take control over the world
I got a pill to night
I got another pill you ..... so high you ...... Hong Kong..."

5. DNA - Fairy Tails --> This track is the slower up to now (143 BPM), but sounds much faster. Powered by an efficient kick/bass combo this track sounds stronger! Lots of samples I can't identify and psychedelic elements all over it... At the middle some kind of vocoded vocals blasts my mind. And the sample fits very well:

"I thought we played real bad last night...
The ..... is real psychedelic..."

6. E-Jekt feat Karld - This Is A Dream --> I like the way this track develops, specially the sample part:

"This is not a dream...
This is not a dream...
This is not a dream!..."

I was almost convinced that this was not a dream, but then they prove me wrong :

"This is a dream... This is our dream...
What I am doing here?"

What I'm doing here? For sure dancing...

7. Aniki - Encourage --> This is the faster track of this release, 148 BPM that at first don't sound that much fast, but the track keep building up with each different bass line the melodic synths. Different work, usually 148 BPM can scare some people, I think this is not the case, this track sounds joyful. The breaks and build ups creates a nice expectative and atmosphere. Most of the sample is difficult to figure out, this is what I understand:

"Spiritual practices such as Yoga and meditation actually to, uhmm, encourage..."

8. Tetrium - Limbo --> Now we move to something slower, but faster . Slower because it has only 147 BPM, one less than the previous track. Faster because the rolling bass makes it sound like 150 BPMs... I like this track's architecture and samples:

"My father would womanize, drink.
He would make outrageous claims...
Like he invented the question mark.
Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy...
The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament."

"- Only two things scare me, and one is nuclear war.
- What's the other?
- Excuse me?
- What's the other thing that scares you?
- Carnies. Circus folk."

Nice melodies during the samples and great lead synth and bass after the samples!

9. Solar Plexus - Imaginary Muse --> This track starts in a weird way, disconnected sounds that slowly group together in an interesting arrange. Around 3:00 it's very good to dance... Good Psychedelic level, this is intelligent full on. After 6:00 I went to another dimension with the melodies. Very good track!

10. Dynamic - Expander --> The slower track on the compilation, 140 BPM, but full of different bass lines, effects and melodies. Fits very well the start of a morning set. Good one Ben!

Verdict: 7.5/10 - This release contains no "Big Hits", but also there is no fillers, most tracks can be played at parties and some are good for home listening as well. More than 71 minutes of music, 10 track, It's a good deal.

Favorites: 3, 4, 5 (!), 7, 8, 9(!) and 10.

Recommendation: If you want to add some power to your sets, maybe this release fits your case. A good think is that since most tracks work on dance floor you can add some diversity to your sets. Another "plus" is that it contains some tracks packed with a nice psychedelic atmosphere (like the Intergalactic, Gataka vs Sequipa and Solar Plexus tracks) and these tracks work on dance floor too. For me it good for home listening too, but I love full on...

Good music. Really like "Weekend from hell" ,"Lightning" , "Grab it" , " Fairy tales" . Makes me dance everytime.
That guys voice at the end of "Weekend from hell" cracks me up everytime.

I downloaded it couple of weeks back. After 5-6 listens i paid it the greatest compliment that i can.

I bought it.
