I do the same, set the kick between -10 and -15 and start mixing from there. I mix while i am producing. If i create a new channel for a instrument or sample, I eq it and adjust the level on the go and continue my production. When i finish the composition and go for mixdown the track will be mostly mixed i just made final adjustments see what can go better etc.
Anyway, when i export the track, I feel its not to loud. I mean, if i m hearing it at level 20 on my car speaker, it wont be too loud. If i hear any other mastered music with the same level will be much louder. This loudness problem can be solved at the mastering stage? Because i never had mastered any track of mine so i want to know that!
peace out |

Yep, thats left to the mastering engineer, I do it the same way as you and after mixdown I put a maximizer on the master channel to raise the volume, not good, as I guess there is a loss in quality and compression by the tool afaik but necessary in order to have moderate volume again |

The only number that I do care for when composing & mixing is on my master. To mix pure without limiter and not to go into the red district on the master fader is my only rule.
Nonsense in following numbers, especially when making own sound design - for instance a kick from a synth, you turn something louder on the plug in and you might need to pull the fader lower or vice versa. Numbers on the channel fader can be quite different depending on the sound design/ synthesis, or the counterparts/sound elements.
Correcting the details in the mix to keep the balance going, goes throughout the whole process anyway.
Also agree on the old technique to close the eyes and put the fingers on the faders if they're there - when mixing the whole machinery.

Yes, when i have done the main loop i compare my production with my favorite tracks of the same genre, only i check out the volume and balance among the elements of the track considering it is only a reference with superior treatment than my production, is a great reference to start the mixing. |

I was wondering if anyone has any unmastered tracks from professional (psytrance) producers to cross reference them with their mastered versions. Or if anyone here has any of their own unmastered tracks that have been mastered, just to see how much of a difference there is.
Cheers |

Here under is the succession of mastering stages used in Manifold Studio.
MixMaster > DC-Offset Removal > Normalization > Denoising > StereoCorrection > Spectral Pre-correction > Lowcut Filtering > M/S-Encoding > Parametric EQing > Artistic EQing > Dynamic EQing > Top-End Limiting > Reverberation > Transient Modulation > Multiband Expansion > Multiband Compression > M/S-Decoding > Loudness Maximizing > Brickwall Limiting > Fade In/Out > Pause Determination > Pq-Editing > Dithering > 16bit Final Master
ouch, poor tunes that go into all this but what ever work |
